Something about that is just really sad.

Re: Chicago Tribune article - No Smoking @ Chicago Pipe Show

That article is just chocked full of great lines, this is my favorite

Quote:
Maureen McHugh, executive director of the DuPage County Health Department, said this is the first time such a conflict over the smoking law has cropped up in the county. She said her department worked extensively Wednesday to "educate" those involved in putting on the event, trying to enforce the law without killing the show. "It's good for the community to get a convention like this," she said.
Basically like saying "We're not allowing you to exercise your freedom, but we still want the revenue which the convention brings in to the area"

I wonder how fast they would change their tune if the pipe show decided to move the convention to a city which allowed smokers.

Mark Chicago off the list of places I'd ever visit.

it'll be interesting to see if they hold the show there next year or move it someplace a little more friendly to "our type"

The New York pipe show was held in ... New Jersey! Don't think they are much friendlier to smokers than NY, lesser level of zealots no doubt.

Re: Chicago Tribune article - No Smoking @ Chicago Pipe Show

Who had the bright idea of organizing a pipe show that is no smoking!?...No offense intended to the hard working commity but I would think you would want the "the pipe smokers WILL be able to smoke" thing written in stone before you do such an event...didn't they ever hear of a thing called a Marquee!

Just back from the show and yes it was indeed a big shock not to be able to smoke in the hall but that said you got to do what you got to do. The pipe club had all its T's crossed till someone's panties got in a wad. They worked with the law but the Feds State County, and City where going to close dow the show if it opened with smoking in the hall, then the club would have to go to court just to prove it was within its right. The show would have been a total loss then.

The tent was nice and was a very good place to relax. I hope these shows continue as i a good time reguardless of the smoking ban.

Hey, hey, thats ignorant. Arabs don't have nukes yet. lol, kidding aside, a pipe smoking convention without smoking is like a boating convention without water. (Granted most boating conventions are not held on the water, but I was trying to make a point.) Just plain dumb.

Re: Chicago Tribune article - No Smoking @ Chicago Pipe Show

Us pipe'rs are too mellow, we put up with this crap and they come up with more crap for us to put up with, and so on and so forth.

The next time there is a Wine expo/tasting - point out to the law'ers that drinking in public is illegal (at least in most towns), the convention hall/hotel is a public place (as they decreed when the pipers were booted out to smoke), therefore drinking wine there would be a violation of the sacred law of not drinking in public places. Send 'em outside into a tent to spit out their wine (what a waste, anyways!).

Likewise, spitting in public places is also probably illegal, so another way to make a legal scene.

Point is - unless we stand up and point out the stupidity of a handful of zealots, we are going back in a historic circle to the time of prohibition. And burning of witches, et al.

And to rub it in a lil more - we're the idiots that elected the idiots that passed these idiot laws. Doh! In NY we can't smoke in bars - that is the most absurd thing, I haven't been to a bar since the ban. Saved a fortune buying beer by the case however.

In Atlantic City, NJ - the casinos are being forced to go smokeless. No smoking at the blackjack table??? What would Bond (thats Bond, James Bond) think!

Dumb as it is ... or at least as it sounds ... the alternative very well may become not having a convention at all.

The greater KC pipe club is having it's own set of worries in trying to gain a smoking venue that will be large enough to handle this year's show.
