Re: Pipe smell

I've also been struggling with this issue.

I'm living with my parents while I'm in school and they don't know that I smoke a pipe, and chances are, if they found out, I'd have to find a new home pretty quick. So I can't leave them sitting out, you can see them, and I notice the smell.

So they're sitting in a plastic ziplock in a tool box in my closet...plus I've got two humidors hidden in my room...

Point being, I haven't yet figured out a way to air them out...

Put the pipe rack under your bed? Aired, hidden.

As long you don't have pets and you clean your own room (vacuum)

Re: Pipe smell

Could do that, but the smell still seems to carry...perhaps I'll give that a test run.

Re: Pipe smell

A little of both I think.

I've got my smoking stuff stashed around my room, so hopefully it won't all be discovered at once!

Edit: You manage to hide a cooler!? Well done!

Lightbulb Re: Pipe smell

Just thought I'd throw this out there.. if you are attempting to Clear the Air of pipe funk maybe go pick up a cheap model car or something like that and leave the cap off the paint and glue.. Pull the old "Sorry Mom I'm getting into a new hobby and Its just the smell of paint as it dries.. I will be sure to clean it up." By the time they really get mad you have cleaned and dried all your pipes and will have a nice little model car or something to use as a tobacco stash.. that is if it has a trunk.. Then tell them the smell was too bad so you're over the models.. cost you about 30 bucks maybe..

anyway.. thats what pops in my mind after a 20 hour work day..

Re: Pipe smell

Here's my routine basically...

Run 1 or more pipe cleaners through after smoking, and leave a clean one in until I smoke it the next time. I believe this helps dry the wood out, and it just seems like a good way to store the pipes.

About once a month, I do an alcohol clean. This consists of dipping pipe cleaners in alcohol and running them through the stem and shank, into the bowl. Then I usualy double a pipe cleaner and ream out the tenon joint. Lastly I take a plain paper towel, creat a tube the size of the bowl. I wet with alcohol and lightly clean out the bowl. Wipe of the bit with alcohol, replace a clean pipe cleaner and put away to dry.

The reality is, the pipe(s) are still going to smell, be it fresh or stinky. Apart from getting a good air cleaner for your storage room, like an ozone unit, I don't think your going to hide the odor and the fact that you're a pipe smoker for long.

You may want to go with a meer, and keep them in your car or somewhere else perhaps. They dry quickly, and don't need to rest, and you don't allow a cake to build up. these things may aid in keeping the smell down.

Take all that knowing I'm a relative newb to the pipe, there are many many more experienced folks that can give you a good and reliable word on this.

Man, I remember what I did (a long time ago) when I was in your shoes. I collected all sorts of model cars and crap when I lived at home, and I had a tractor/trailer truck model that hid............ let's call it paraphernalia. No matter how stinky the stink was I was trying to hide I never got caught. And none of these toys were airtight enough to prohibit drying.

Give it a try

Re: Pipe smell

Use only ethanol thats 99.8% water free, never any drinking kind! Water in the pipe is not good, and theres ~60% H^2O of in wiskey! Also, never use salt in the pipe, it makes the pipe taste like toilet bowl cleaner (amonia). I use potato flour instead. Salt wil also imbed int he pipe, causing it to get wet faster, as it VERY hydroscopic....HOWEVER, cleaning pipes is someting u rarely should do, it disolves the tar, that helps the pipe get the flavour to your tastebuds, intead of being left in the bowl (or whereever it goes!? )! If my smoking vessel tastes bad, I just clean in lightly with a tissue or toothbrush, and put it on a shelf for some time, after drying it with the hairdrier on low speed (15-30mins). Dont clean or blow dry pipes within a day before inteded use.

My best way of loading the bowl, is to fill it 2/3rds with moist baccy from the tin, and ad the rest from a stash or newly dried tobacco, of the same sort. I use a hairdryer to dry tobacco in a tea sieve, the kind that has two spherical halfs and a hinge closed by a spring.
