n00b Question - How do I remove the filter?
Hey everybody; I've been wanting to give pipe smoking a try and Bleedingshrimp told me about the pipe forum on CS, so here I am
![]() I picked up a cheap briar pipe (Dr. Grabow) and some tobacco, matches, and other stuff, and based on what I've read on here, I'd like to try smoking without the filter. This presents a problem because I can't seem to get to said filter to remove it. I've tried pulling on and twisting the bit, and twisting the chrome piece that holds it to the bowl, and have gotten ZERO movement. I've used a decent amount of force, but I don't want to use much more for fear of breaking my pipe before I've even smoked out of it. What do I need to do here? |

I accidentally left my nice briar over night in my car during a Wisconsin Winter The wood expanded and the stem fit VERY loosel. I was worried I ruined it. However, once it warmed back up, everything fit snuggly again. |

Re: n00b Question - How do I remove the filter?
Got it! The filter is gone and the pipe is back together and about to be packed. BTW, should I but the bit back on the bowl with alot of force, or just enough to make them stay together?

Re: n00b Question - How do I remove the filter?
Just to put them together. There won't be a snap or anything but you'll see when the pieces are together. As for going to smoke, I think I'd let that pipe at least achieve room temp before you fire it up. Hate to see you take all this trouble just to see the bowl split or something. Put it in your pocket for a bit it you're in a hurry
Go boooiiieeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: n00b Question - How do I remove the filter?
The metal thing in the stem is a filter AND can be removed? How does it stay attached to the pipe then? I thought the reason the metal part was there was to connect it to the shank?

Re: n00b Question - How do I remove the filter?
Mr Lordi - kinda sounds like you might be talking about something else. Might you be talking about a Kaywoodie pipe? If so, that is called the stinger and is not a filter, per se. More of a venturi, and is part of the screw on type stem.
The filter referenced previously usually just slides into the stem and looks somewhat like the filter on a cigarette.

Re: n00b Question - How do I remove the filter?
Mine are Garbow's, and it could be a "stinger" type thing.
Its a small metal rod that is inserted into the end of the stem, and the piece has two cuts in it. it's then inserted into the shank. It looks nothing like the Kaywoodie metal piece's though. I wish I could find my cam to post a pic. EDIT: It prob is a stinger, just a different looking one. Last edited by Mr.Lordi; 05-13-2008 at 03:05 AM.. |
