Burn times

Was wondering what some of the burn/smoke times were a bowl of your fave. blends.
Mine is about 30 to 45 minutes for a bowl of Evening Stroll. My guess is because it is real moist.

Also, is yours moist or dry.

Thanks, just looking to see what I might be able to use as a nice relaxing smoke on the back porch at the lakehouse and what I might use when I want something fast like say 10 to 15 minutes.

Re: Burn times

I smoke FVF in a mid to large size bowl to relax and today it ran well over an hour because I don't like to hurry and I like to sip virginias. A good 15 minute smoke will probably be anything you want but in a cob.

Re: Burn times

I would also say a cob or small bowl briar for 10-15 minutes, plus have it on the drier side of things as it should burn faster.

Re: Burn times

I have a cob which seems to burn Penzance better than anything I own but get frustrated because it smokes so short and I love a long smoke.

Re: Burn times

My personal preference is at least 30 minutes. If I can't take a half hour to smoke a bowl, then I don't. I dry my tobacco out. Not brittle. Just not moist. I put out a bowlful under a desk lamp for around 15 minutes.

Re: Burn times

if u want a faster smoke, just dont fill the bowl up..

1/3 of a small bowl usually lasts me 20 min or so.. but im a slow smoker... i puff for a while, then put the bowl down for 5-10min and let it cool off.. then pick it up and go again.. takes me hours to finish a fully packed large bowl. I suppose thats why i lean towards smaller bowls

Re: Burn times

I usually drag a bowl out over several hours, sometimes on purpose (DGT) but mostly out of necessity (PUT DOWN THAT PIPE AND GET BACK TO WORK).

Flake/cake baccy (or pressed in any way) burn slower, if I use a larger bowl pipe with a flake I get close to 2 hours of burn time when I take it slow enough to need many relights. Ribbon or other cuts I get about 1.5 hr average under the same slow smoking method.

I prefer not to load partial bowls (unless breaking in a new briar), I find that many blends don't develop completely unless you have it filled to the brim - leaves you wanting more, and you end up loading another half bowl, and so on. Might as well load the whole kit 'n kaboodle and enjoy it the right way.

I too tend to dry my tobacco, as most tins are simply too moist for immediate consumption.

As regards burn times, the longer the merrier, which is why I prefer bigger bowls - also helps develop the flavour.

Re: Burn times

For me time is always an issue. I always seem to end up buying smallish bowl pipes although I'm a kind of big guy. A small bowlful will last me 30 minutes (I rarely let the tobacco dry).

I have a hard time sitting for long enough to enjoy much more than a half hour smoke. I prefer non-aromatics so I can generally set a faster pace without getting tongue bite or developing the gurgles.

Re: Burn times

I'll usually keep a bowl going continuously for about 15-20 minutes, then let it cool and re-light. On re-lightings, I keep the bowl lit for a shorter period each time, then continue this process until I smoke the entire bowl. Depending upon what I'm doing at the time and interruptions, it can take me hours to smoke a full bowl.

Re: Burn times

Most of the time churchwardens a re good for a 30 minute or less smoke as the bowl is usually (not always) fairly small.

Re: Burn times

I typically aim between 30 and 45 minutes. I have a pretty limited attention span, so I prefer to smoke several smaller bowls of different tobacco, rather than spending over an hour with the same blend. There are occasions when I'll settle in for the long haul with a big bowled pipe, but I tend to use my bigger pipes for DGT'ing.

Re: Burn times

When I take the time to sit with a bowl I generally am planning on 30 minute minimum, and would prefer to sit for 45 minutes or more. But that's part of the pipe's beauty...set it down and unless it's an aromatic (or certain Lat blends) it will likely be even better when you come back to it.

Re: Burn times

The logest bowl I remember smoking was and hour and twenty minutes FVF straight from the can in a medium sized Pete. If I dry it and grind it it might last only twenty minutes. Preference depends on the mood and setting.
