Black & Mild style tobacco

Hello everyone.

I was wondering if anyone could tell me which of the standard tinderbox pipe tobacco blends would be closest to the taste of a black and mild? I like the taste of B&Ms, but i think a pipe would be classier and cheaper in the long run.

The only store around me that sells pipe baccy is tinderbox, so i'd prefer to purchase there.

http://www.tinderbox.com/s.nl/sc.2/category.5095/.f

I don't even know how to describe the taste of tobacco well, so its hard for me to find it based on the descriptions.

Thanks!

I can't tell you which of their blends you want,
but they will sell you 1 oz. samplers for a couple
bucks. Our Tinderbox here will let you try a pipefull.
I have to give the Reno Tinderbox a plug here.
Most times when I get home and start putting away
my purchases, I find the sneaky sales clerk has stuck a
little something extra in the bag.

Tinderbox Wilshire is the same thing as Lanes 1-Q or Captain Black as it's popular name sold OTC at most drug stores. I'm not sure on Black & Mild though.

Ah man come one you know you wanna dive in on those blends that actually taste like tobacco right. Well if not then go to the Tinderbox ask to try a bowlfull of something and tell them what you're looking for. But seriously you will save alot of time and effort if you start w/ straigh virginia's and English's because your tastes will change and you will start to desire something that doesn't taste like a drugstore baccy.

Welcome to the Pipe Forum at Club Stogie!

I don't think you'll find too many here smoking Black and Mild tobacco anymore. If you're looking for something similar in taste, just ask you B&M for a similar profile: {"black Cavendish with Burley and golden Virginia for balance. A sweet vanilla rounded out with a complex fruity background. Smooth, mild, and cool. It tastes as good as it smells." at least that's what it says at the Middleton site.

You might also want to check out tobaccoreviews to hear what others say about it and to possible use as a reference for finding different blends of tobacco you might want to try in the future.

The way I started into this whole thing was by sampling many different blends of tobaccos in small quantities to get an idea of what I like. Since you have a Tinderbox near you, you can start there.

There's a whole world of blends and styles of tobacco out there waiting to be tried.

Re: Black & Mild style tobacco

First off, welcome to the pipe forum and CS in general.

Now, onto your question...

You know, if you check out your local CVS or wal-greens they may have a few sacks of middleton pipe tobacco behind the counter (along with some corn cob pipes). My advice would be to check that out. As you probably know, black and milds are made with middleton pipe tobacco... so I imagine you could find something similar to a black and mild. Oh, and pick up a cob while your at it.

Also... if you have to buy from tinderbox, they may have a blend called "Wilshire Blend" - you might like that one... they had it at my tinderbox and it's gonna be in the same vein as the B&M stuff... it's what I started on when I re-introduced myself to the pipe.

Now to really upgrade, go to pipesandcigars.com and pick up a couple ounces of their butternut burley. It's gonna be like the wilshire blend but not as sweet tasting (plenty sweet, but in a much nicer and slightly subtler way) and they probably use a higher quality leaf. You will like this stuff. Trust me.

Edit - lastly, your probably ultimately going to want to take Blaylock's advice and see what your tobacconist can suggest for you and to sample a variety of different blends. I'm sure you will enjoy seeing what else is out there.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I think i will try the wilshire and see what that is like. I live in a college town, you see, and the tinderbox, while it has pipe tobacco, has staff which is mostly focused on the...ehm...other sorts of pipes. So they are not very helpful with other things.

You might want to try buying online if the staff at tinderbox can't help you. There's a stickie with all sorts of websites for pipes and tobacco and the advice at CS is great. Also I have to strongly recommend Blaylock's advice. I got started by trying black and milds and prime times and moved to the ipe from there trying different tobacco's and now I really can't stand black and milds or prime times. I'm not rying to sound like a snob here but the different blends of tobacco have so many more flavors and subtleties that it's hard to go back. My advice is to pick up some Prince Albert (I really enjoy it and it's a great starting tobacco) also ask the guys at Tinderbox what the most popular blend is and pick up some of that. (It's usually popular for a reason) Oh and definitely get a couple of cobs. They're great for getting started cuz if you scorch the rim or lose it, it's only a five dollar pipe. Welcome to the slope. Enjoy the way down.
