Escudo discontinued?

Is it true what I read in another thread that Escudo has been discontinued? That's a shame if it turns out to be true. I don't know all the "movers and shakers" in CS but I figure someone in the distribution side at least monitors this forum and might give us some insight.

I went to a local B&M on the way home after learning about this earlier today an bought the last 2 tins of Escudo they had. I asked the owner if he had heard anything about it and he said he hadn't, but at the same time it wouldn't surprise him it it were true. He blamed it on fuel prices and a slowing US economy (and a weaker dollar).

Does anyone have any credible intel on this?

Re: Escudo discontinued?

I don't believe that it has anything to do with the high prices of fuel and a slowing economy.

From what I've read, mostly on other boards, it seems that the current distributors may not be distributing it anymore, but the manufacturing will continue. On the other hand, I've been reading that the manufacturer is stopping production. In other words, it doesn't seem there's any conclusive answers yet.

All I know is that many seem to be scrambling to get their hands on on these just in case.

I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Re: Escudo discontinued?

I did some research into this. Well, I tried, with mixed results.

Firstly, the parent company in Denmark apparently has some management shuffling and/or other problems. They recently sold some children companies, especially cigarette manufacturing. I did some online translations from their press releases and it came out sounding like Yoda on PCP - but I got the gist of it. Now this may or may not have any bearing on a top seller such as Escudo.

On the other side of the coin (pun intended), it is POSSIBLE that some delivery hiccup caused a shortage. Followed by frantic buyers sucking up 20 tin orders, it could have driven the price up - Cup O Joes is selling them for $9.99 with a 5 per customer limit. I have reliable intel that smokingpipes.com received a shipment of 250 tins of Escudo yesterday, only 20 were sold by the time of this posting. They are still moving it at $8.40 a tin ($75+ gets free shipping). Restocking at that volume tends to suggest that there is no longer any delivery problem.

Of course if we all stampede over to smokingpipes and empty the racks, it will no doubt cause another shortage and corresponding price jump. I suggest patience and waiting and watching. And if anyone here speaks Danish, by all means drop a dime and call the company http://www.st.dk I may be a man of many talents, but speaking Danish is not one of them.

Re: Escudo discontinued?

I was just at Smokingpipes.com's retail store today. The 250 tins that they got in were from 2 different distributers and the last that each had. I bought 10 tins while I was there. The count was now down to 120 when I was there.

The story that Todd, their store manager, told me was that the US Distributer was no longer going to be carrying this. He stated that they might be able to get Escudo in the future but maybe not. And there is a chance that it will be more expensive depending on the distributer.

I know that Todd knows what he is talking about. I would stock up if I were you.

Please tell me that the rumors are not true. This is one of my favorites. This calls for a bowl tomorrow night. I will be checking with my local shop in hopes of finding a tin.

I really hope this is just a hiccup.. It would be a real shame to see such an amazing blend end production.

I agree.. I've heard very different things from my two B&M shops out here, one shop says its all gone, the other says not to worry.. I think its a good way of selling a lot of tobacco at an inflated price..
