No re-lighting?

The last dozen or so bowls I've been able to enjoy all the way to the bottom of the bowl without re-lighting. Am I smoking too fast? Or have I just followed the good advice of all of you here in the pipe forum
The pipe is not getting hot or anything.

I'm not talking about in my small clay pipe, I'm talking about in the pretty decent size Savinelli briar

Re: No re-lighting?

Sounds like you've found a good combination of pipe/tobacco and packing. What are you smoking and how are you packing/lighting?

What's being smoked in what pipe? With Orlik Golden Sliced I can pull that feat off in any type of pipe but have very little luck with other blends.

It's a balance of the right pipe, and the baccy with the right moisture content. I've recently had good success with pipes that used to not smoke well by storing them with a cottonball soaked in vodka in the bowl. The vodka drives the moisture out of the briar and I find they smoke cooler and dryer.

Re: No re-lighting?

Awesome job man. My last bowl was pretty good, only had to relight twice, and I was pretty happy with myself.

Kinda like hitting the zone in sports. It starts coming more and more the less you look for it, and the more you are just enjoying the process of having a smoke.

Re: No re-lighting?

Thanks for the encouragement guys! I'm pretty much using Frank method packing and have been smoking a lot of Frog Morton lately and a couple of house blends from the local B&M.
I know what you mean about being in the zone! That's how I feel. Have been enjoying bowls with friends more and more and fussing with the pipe less and less. Just enjoying the smoke and the company.
