darks spots on bowl
i just got a comoys silver shadow estate in the mail. seems to be in decent shape besides a large, really dark spot on the bowl. actually, the whole bowl seems to have gotten pretty dark, and it doesnt seem like it was the intent.
i remember reading a thread either here or someone else about lightening a pipes finish but now i cant find it. any ideas on how to go about lightening it up? |

Re: darks spots on bowl
i clean the outside of estate pipes w/murphy's oil soap & a toothbrush-this'll get rid of the surface dirt-then i hit it w/white diamond & carnuba on the buffer-sometimes the pipe just darkens up thru smoking, developing a patina, no way i know of to get this off w/o refinishing the pipe-i have a GBD like this, where the bowl's so dark it's almost hard to see the grain

Re: darks spots on bowl
well, the finish is really bad and discolored in a ton of spots. i decided to just throw it in a thing of alcohol and see how it strips down. we'll see i guess!
anyone have tips for sanding and waxing once its fully bare? |

Re: darks spots on bowl
I dont think soaking it in alcohol is a good idea.I think its best to just use a wet sand paper and go slow to see how the stain comes off. Then let the briar dry out real good. After that you can restain it or leave it bare briar and then wax it.As for waxing i like using Paragon wax.You can apply it by hand and just keep rubbing it in it might take a little elbow grease but it will shine up nice.

Re: darks spots on bowl
When restoring, there are some approaches depending on the sunject - es alcohol will break down tar fast and strip the pipe, but this will also dry wood quickly, possibly leading to a crack or other damage.
If you feel your pipe is unusually strong or cheap, feel free to use harsh means. Otherwise, I would proceed with somewhat more caution - also, I would be careful with the dremel - you can easily build heat in a small spot. Better a larger buff- like 7".

Re: darks spots on bowl
wipe was def cheap and seems pretty durable. would a buffer wheel in a drll be a bit better than a dremel?

Re: darks spots on bowl
a wheel in a drill is a lot better than a dremel-the small wheel size on a dremel makes it easy to heat up areas too fast-the larger area of a buffing wheel is more forgiving

Re: darks spots on bowl
I would never use a dremel to buff a pipe,Thats asking for trouble. As said before use the larger buffing wheel in a drill.
If your looking to get the paragon,I got mine here. www.finepipes.com Alan ![]() |

Renaissance Wax is basically what is repackeged as the other stuff. It'll cost $20-$25 for a 200ml can which should last you years. You can find it at any WoodCrafters or similar store.
