The Monsters of Templeton, by Lauren Groff.

It's not what I expected it to be at all, but a great read none the less. In fact I am enjoying it with some Plumcake as we speak.

If you like historical fiction, you might enjoy this book. Replace Templeton with Cooperstown and fill in all the dirty details of its origin.....makes for an interesting read.

I am a history freak as well. I was a history major in college until last year when i had to take a break due to a job offer that i couldnt pass up.

Is history of the first world war written by keegan. I just started a book about world war one by him. i really am enjoying it.

I really enjoyed devil in the white city. That was a great book that combined history with a murder mystery type read.

Doctor Dogbody's Leg - James Norman Hall

Why I like reading it with a pipe: Pirates! Perfect pipe fare. Written by one of the co-authors of Mutiny on the Bounty, it's a fun read. Dogbody is an old british navy surgeon retelling the tales of how he lost his leg. Every time he tells it the story is different. The way the book is presented allows you to read just one short tale at a time or continue on. So if you have a small bowl you can still sit down for a small read if you want.

genre fiction is excellent when smoking. for some reason it fits great. rather than sea tales, im more into westerns but they are both great!

I met Joe Galloway while up in Ft. Drum for a seminar. He was being drug around the states by then CSA Gen Shinseki, so this was around '02/'03.

Since it seems this topic has nothing to do with pipes at all:
The Hill by Leonard B. Scott
Iron Men by Leonard B. Scott
Charlie Mike by Leonard B. Scott
The Last Run by Leonard B. Scott
The Expendables by Leonard B. Scott

Re: Suggested reading....

Yes it was the book by Keegan. I passed it on to a coworker to read. I was hooked on history by a 8th grade teacher who made the war between the states come alive when I was floundering in school.
Visited fields of battle such as Spotsylvania, Chancellorsville, Fredericksburg, Manassas, and have been hooked ever since.
All it took was one good teacher to replace what 8 grades of mediocre teachers had done.
Spent a few years in Germany, while there read about the 2nd World War and visited it.

Hooked ever since.

Next step is a little further back to the revolution and the 100 year war (french and indian) for us.

Dave

Re: Suggested reading....

Any of the Bosch series from Michael Connelly. For anyone who hasn't ever sampled these titles Bosch is almost a Harry Callahan character, albeit in a series that reached deeper, with better defined characters.

Reading these novels set in San Francisco, smoking a pipe on the front porch....... ah it doesn't get much better than that!
