Burning Feeling

I know that if you puff too hard at a fast pace it will cause a burning sensation in your mouth a lips, I slowed my pace and it stills burns, it feels like I just drank a cup of hot chocolate and my taste buds are gone, all my friends are saying "can you taste the cavendish? what about the vanilla?" and all I say is no because my taste buds are burnt...hell the only thing I have tasted was a sort of metallic taste when I pulled the stem away from my lips...

is this natural or any cause for this?

I have been meaning to thank madurofan for pushing me in the right start by gifting me two pipes and some awesome tobacco, I just want to do it the right way in the bombs section with pictures, but my parents took the picture sending tool off our plan so I need to wait till i get home.

Thanks for any info,
Mackey

Re: Burning Feeling

It's called tongue bite.

There can be various causes. I've experienced it with cigars also. I'm not an expert, but I read about it after doing a search on google a couple of weeks ago.

I'm headed to the store, or I'd type more.

Google it up, or hopefully some of our more experienced pipe smokers can explain better.

Good luck!

Re: Burning Feeling

usually when i smoke any predominantly cavendish blend the predominate flavor seems to be singed tongue. To me Cavendish tastes like air which usually makes me puff more/faster. i'd try smoking an english or a virginia or whatever you got, and try to just puff enough to keep it lit. Don't worry about it going out, thats part of pipe smoking. Instead just have as cool and tasty smoke as possible, the cooler you can keep the smoke, the better it will taste, and the more complexities you'll be able to pick up on. I'm pretty sure if you slow down your burnt mouth will go away. You are literally burning your mouth with hot smoke, so if you slow down after burning your mouth, it might still feel burnt. if you think you're going slow, and you still burn your mouth, you're not going slow enough.

Also if your pipes arn't broken in yet this can make your smoke a little hot. If they don't have a good cake, i've been told by the pros (madurofan) to smoke half bowls until you get one worked up.

I'm a perpetual overpuffer myself, you've got to try and slow it down and enjoy it.

Re: Burning Feeling

Thanks for the info Doc. You know, I find that the singe happens mostly when I am trying to light the pipe not when it is already lit. I'm breaking in a pipe (half bowls as told by a vet as well) and in order to get a good light so I don't have to keep lighting every few minutes I think I am puffing a bit too much. Otherwise I smoke really slow but by the time it's lit my mouth can be numb at times.

yup... what he said. I have this problem with my pipes that are not broken in, the Carbonized bowls don't seem to help either, it just takes time. Part of the reason I like estate pipes so much.

Pack your bowls a little tighter, proabably will help with the relights.

Re: Burning Feeling

Use non flavored tobaccos until the pipe is seasoned... They burn to hot and cause increased heat. Smoke regular tobacco the first 8-10 times to season a new pipe.
Good luck

Re: Burning Feeling

I've experienced Tongue Bite.

I don't know why I got it, but I read that it's from packing too tightly or too loosely, having tobacco too wet or too dry, having a new pipe with no 'cake' or an old nasty pipe with too much cake and gunk, just plain having 'harsh' tobacco.......so it can be caused by many different factors I guess.

I got it several times with cigars. In retrospect I think I was puffing hard and fast, and maybe those were some Thompson cigars.

Re: Burning Feeling

From what I've read elsewhere, tongue bite can be caused also by your body reacting poorly to a certain tobacco. For example, pipe smoker A just loves red VA flakes; they smoke cool and flavorful for him. Pipe smoker B can't even light his pipe fully before the same tobacco leaves his tongue feeling like scorched earth (this has happened to me, I was being VERY careful too. The bite stayed with me for 3 days!). VAs have a reputation for having the greatest potential to bite. They can be a real challenge for me to smoke correctly, perhaps because of the body chemstry hypothesis that some mention. I guess you might say it's sort of like an alergy. For that matter, there's quite a few "alergic" to perique.

Just figured I should add that since I didn't see it yet in this thread.

Try something with latakia. If you like smokey highland single malts you'll probably enjoy a heavy latakia blend. Latakia is also generally very cool smoking (gentle) and slow burning. IHT apparently loves Da Vinci. I like that stuff too -- 75% latakia! Get a tin from JR. English blends containing Latakia may slow the burning rate of the VAs and make for a more pleasant experience for people who fear tongue bite from VAs.

Smokem slow; keep your hand on the bowl to check on how hot it's getting; try breath smoking.
