Butternut Burley as a cake builder?
Hi,
I've been smoking Scotty's Butternut Burley lately and wondered how it would be for breaking in new pipes. I'm really enjoying this stuff. Since it's burley based, will it cake more quickly? If so, will it leave a bad ghost behind if I were to smoke a vaper in the pipe after? I'm not sure if BB is considered more of an aromatic which will leave smells behind. I've got an order out for SG's St James Flake right now but would like to have the pipe "broken in" before my shipment arrives. Otherwise, I would simply break in the pipe with the new tobacco. Thanks! ![]()

Burley does cake faster (in my opinion), but you're looking at 2 months as opposed to 3 months, or thereabouts. Cakes take time, unless we bake one patty-cake-patty-cake style. Also (in my opinion) burley does leave a distinctive "smack" behind - I wouldn't call it a ghost, but it does leave a certain aftertaste. I have 2 pipes dedicated to burleys (thanks to EvanS, whom one of those pipes is named after!). I really wouldn't worry too much about the cake or ghost at this point, take more care in breaking in that puppy (not too hot, clean it well, etc).

Re: Butternut Burley as a cake builder?
i just break in the pipe w/the type of tobac it will be used with-if you do use a tobac because it cakes more quickly & it leaves a ghost/aftertaste, just do the cotton ball/alcohol treatment (like the salt/alcohol treatment)-it won't affect the cake but it will remove the lingering taste

Re: Butternut Burley as a cake builder?
Since the St James Flake will take about 2 weeks to get here...I was simply hoping to get a head start on breaking in the new pipe. Otherwise, I would start with the tobac of choice. Also, I really would like to try the new pipe out!
![]() Just wondered if the Butternut Burley would ruin the pipe which I'm considering dedicating to a vaper. As suggested, I guess I could just do the salt/alcohol treatment if such were the case.

Re: Butternut Burley as a cake builder?
sure, i'd say fire it up-i've just "switched" some of my pipes over from english to VA-after the S/A treatment, i can smoke a light VA in a pipe that used to be for heavy englishes & not taste the latakia

I ordered from smokingpipes...and my last order of Odyssey from them took just under two weeks. In fact, at the time I wrote the initial post I was still waiting for my two new pipes to arrive...figured they would have been here by late last week. But, still waiting. I'm sending a PM. ![]()
