Bowl Size Vs. Length of smoke

I was just looking around for my first pipe and I was wondering if this has ever been discussed before? I know the length of a smoke is different from person to person and that person's mood is also a variable. A small bowl is a small bowl you're just not going to get the same time on it as you would a large bowl. so I guess my question is: what is the average time it takes for you to smoke?

a small bowl?
a medium bowl?
a standard bowl?
a large bowl?
a calabash?

Re: Bowl Size Vs. Length of smoke

There are a couple more variables than just bowl size. Draught size (airhole), type of tobacco, moisture content, and firmness of packing all play a role too.

But to your question, I'd estimate that most of my pipes are size 4 or 5, and take me about 1 1/2 hours to smoke a full, firmly packed bowl.

The pipe I got the other day in the mail (see "Photos of Pipes" thread) is tiny. The tobacco chamber is 11/16 x 1". It took me a bit over an hour to smoke a bowl of McClelland 2015. I think this is due to the narrower draught hole and the fact that flakes take longer to burn.

Blackdog pretty much hit the nail on the head. There are a ton of variables. For me, I tend to like mine a little on the drier side, and using larger bowls. I can get through those in 30 minutes or less sometimes, other times it may take 45 minutes or longer.

Re: Bowl Size Vs. Length of smoke

I just finished a 2 "coin" bowl of Escudo in my Bjarne freehand pipe. To give you an idea of the length of the smoke I packed it up and lit it right at tip off time of the USA vs. China game that just finished, so I had just short of 2 hours of gentle puffing enjoyment.

I smoke slow with hardly any relights.

Great game by the way...looks like this years team is playing well together as they destroyed the Chinese team. I hope that they continue on that path and put to rest the memory of the Athens team of prima donnas.

Go USA!!!
