Packing your pipe

Thank you for this thread. I am a newbie to pipe smoking, and after reading this thread, found that I was packing my bowl too tight. I agree that the word "packing" should be dropped from the pipe smokers vocabulary. It really is mis-informing. You all have contributed a great deal, and I am a happy smoker because of it. Thank you

You pack a stadium.
You pack a punch. (Or you go down)
You pack a picnic basket. (Or your wife does.)
You pack a lunch.
You pack an abscess. (Or the nurse does.)

You fill a pipe - lightly, gently and uniformly according to the rules.

Or you won't burn calories or an egg or your finger or a bridge or a cake.
You'll burn your tongue.

but never pack your pipe. Stow it or secure it for travel, but not to pack it. You are confusing the youngsters who still think you can pack a pipe.

Then shouldn't you abandon the phrase "smoke a pipe" becuse, in fact, you smoke the tobacco - not the pipe.

All I know is if I order a pipe and the warehouse guy gets a packing list he better not forget my pipe!!

i really didnt need to see that. kinda threw me for a loop. why is it there are no good pipe smoking videos on youtube. when you think you found one you get a crotch shot.

I agree. That was definitely unneeded. For some good youtube pipe vids however, try these links.

Peter. To "Smoke a pipe" is fine as "Smoke a cigar" stands on its' own. But "Pack a pipe" is out and that is that.

Also, I would fight to the death "Sucking cigars" (or cigars that suck) if you asked me to.

wow i did this today. great tips. ive been packing not filling my pipes. what a wonderful smoke. i stoped to fill up at lunch took about 5 minutes sat back down and it was still lit. thanks guys. im a new man
