Re: Go for a walk with your pipe?
There was a movie guy who could do it all with a pipe in his mouth. I saw an old WWII-era B&W movie a while back; maybe it had Clark Gable in it - something like that... well, anyhow, there are these guys who are always standing around talking on a small pier on a south Pacific island. One of them ("Doc", I think) is forever puffing on a billiard. He's standing, being wise, walking, talking, gesturing and always puffing right along.
I remember thinking that it couldn't be great smoking out in the sun on a south pacific island; that the guy could walk, talk, act AND smoke all at the same time (good man, Doc); and that he must have been a real-deal pipe smoker to pull it off looking so natural and comfortable with that pipe. There was no way I could have been that busy, acting or in r/l, and enjoyed a pipe at the same time.

Re: Go for a walk with your pipe?
Its rare if I smoke when I'm not walking around. Its not as good a smoke at all (I smoke faster when I'm walking I find), especially combined with the wind (wind caps are great, but I forget them all the time), but its still damn nice. I'd say 90-95% of the time I smoke I'm walking (well, and vice-versa). Makes you appreciate sitting down a lot more.

Re: Go for a walk with your pipe?
I think pipes are best smoked when not walking. I have no problem walking and smoking, but it's a hassle trying to light up, put the windcap on, walk with it, have it go out, have to remove windcap, tamp, relight and and put the windcap back on and then repeat every few steps. *sigh* lol
Even my beloved Irish Flake gives me problems outside. Inside though, it stays lit really well. Not to mention the only way to really light up outside is one of those wind proof lighters which can scorch the top of your pipe, which is not good. ![]() |
