Go for a walk with your pipe?

Was wondering if anyone goes for walks with their pipe? If so what do you do when you want to go into a store or other place where you can't smoke? Stick it in your pocket somehow?

windcaps like this:

http://www.pipesandcigars.com/windcap.html

work great-i use one if it's windy outside or if the pipe doesn't have an established cake-they're also good to keep the tobac from spilling so you can put the pipe in your pocket

Just another reason to own a handful of cobs.

So you just throw them away?

Do windcaps come in different bowl sizes? Those don't look like they would fit a few of my pipes.

If you walk to a store or some such place with your pipe just stop puffing about 5 minutes before you get there and it'll be out by the time you arrive. You can carry it in hand in the store or drop it in your shirt pocket while inside... Once you leave tamp and re-light!

No. But I don't worry about destroying them either. Wind or no wind.

I saw a cool old pipe called "Rallye", it had a flip up lid. I supposed they are for motorists?

This is what I do. If you want to really get the PC blood pumping, walk in with the pipe clenched in your teeth. Unlit, mind you, but it will get people faux-coughing and hand waving in no time!

Do the windcaps get pretty hot? If I need to relight, will I burn my fingers trying to remove the cap?

They do get hot, but they cool fast as well. Rule of thumb for me is that if it is breezy enough to need a wind cap I just don't smoke a pipe. I us the wind cap for the purpose stated by Arizona a few posts back. I put the cap on, stick the pipe in a shirt pocket and go in. The cap keeps the pocket clean and burn hole free. And no, the cap won't fit all pipes but they do fit the majority of mine. Actually ash that has been tamped a time or two is sturdier than you would think. Unless it gets bumped around while in the pocket it will stay put fairly well.

Re: Go for a walk with your pipe?

I walked to the library yesterday to return some videos for me kid. I had my pipe nicely lit before I started the walk. I kept my hand cupped over the bowl while I was inside. It seemed to work fine, I couldn't smell any smoke and no one complained. I stopped into a gas station on the way back and did the same while I was hunting and buy junk food.

Re: Go for a walk with your pipe?

Walking with a pipe is challenging for me, like walking and chewing gum, only higher risk. I don't care so much if I accidentally drop Big red or Orbit Mojito flavored gum on concrete. Also, whenever I put something in my shirt pocket I invariable lean over to pick up something else and see the pocketed item slipping down and away, out of reach; it is usually a new pair of sunglasses that are without a chink in the lenses (yet).

My meers and most of the briars are better off being smoked at the house, in the car or sitting outside on a bench. I honor the coordinated multi-taskers who can enjoy walking and smoking and never drop a cherished pipe.

When the great outdoors and pipes figure together for me I'll take a cob and not care (that much) if it kisses the pavement. Also, your standard cob is geared to be empty by the time you reach a destination 20-minutes away. Leave home, fill the cob, light, smoke, walk 20-minutes, scrape, go in the store, leave the store, refill, light, smoke, walk, get home, all ash again. Two bowls, forty-minutes round trip. Science.

About 5 years ago my wife and I were out running a few errands in the car. I had a new Peterson that was on its way to breaking in and I set it on the dash. My wife rounded a corner at about 20 and the pipe shot right out through my window. It was like the whole thing happened in slow motion and I couldn't move. We went back to pick up the pieces and I found it had held up pretty well. One ding and a few small scratches. Not a crack anywhere. That pipe is one of my better smokers today. I thought about refinishing it but left the scars in it as a reminder.

That's a great story!

Put me in the camp of those who can't walk and multitask.

Don't stick it in your back pocket like I did.. I ended up with burn through from hot ash and wasted my bottle of water I had picked up..
