Enjoying English.

I have been smoking a few different blends blackdog sent to me, such a nice fella, but I have been enjoying english the most. I purchased 8oz of penzance and so far its been the baccy I have been judging everything else against.

My guess is its the latakia thats getting to me. I have some 965 but it just doesn't hit the spot like the penzance does. I am wondering if its the latakia thats doing it? And if so are there some blends out there with a heavier latakia?

I seem to be craving the latakia flavor, I just finished a bowl 5 minutes ago and already I am loading another, this shi*t is like crack!

Nothing beats Penzance. Commonwealth by Samuel Gawith is a latakia bomb 50% VA 50% latakia. It is cheap too $5.99 a tin at smokingpipes.com Latakia definatly got me sliding down the slope with Squadron Leader. I then moved to VaPer blends.

Hard to beat P'ez for a sweet, smokey bowl. Beware LOS (Latakia Oversmoking Syndrome) - it can ruin your taste for cheeseburgers over time.

Stonhaven is one of my favorite tobaccos at the moment. I don't think of it as an English though...rather a Va/Burley. I may be wrong, but I don't think it has any of the latakia in it, that you're craving.

I agree with the Penzance choice. Some others I enjoy are Squadron Leader, Nightcap and Frog Morton.

I've gotta second the recommendation for Commonwealth. 50/50 latakia and virginia and an incredibly enjoyable, smoke with plenty of body.

I really enjoy an English blend...however, I can only smoke it for 30 to 40 minutes. I find any longer than that and the latakia doesn't taste as good....with each minute that passes I get diminishing returns. I guess my taste buds get overloaded and I'm ready to be done.

I've made the mistake of making some of my larger pipes dedicated to English blends...I'm now thinking about converting them to other types and sticking to smaller bowls for English. Or, I'll just start smoking half-bowls instead. However, my eyes are always larger than my appetite...I have a hard time not loading the bowl to the top. 2 hours later I'm stuck sucking away when I'm really not in the mood anymore...just feel too gulty about dumping the unburnt baccy.

Perhaps it's just the Enlgish blends I've been smoking, though...maybe I need to try one that's a little lighter on the latakia.

This is a tough diagnosis to make over the internet; we need to put your tongue under a microscope to know what's going on. EvanS mailed his tongue to a lab for evaluation and, after he put it back, he only liked burley. I told him not to send it to the lab; he should've sent it to the bulldog.

It could be a case of LOS (Latakia Oversmoking Syndrome) but it might be the more cureable TSI (Tobacco Selection Issue) that I was successfully treated for. Extended forays into intense latakia can corrrupt the programming of younger tongues. Self-medication with more delicate english blends often allows sufferers to resume extended smoking of english blends. Consider a retreat to moderate bowls of Squadron Leader or PS Proper English for a three month period.

Smoke two bowls and call me in the morning.

Funny. It's almost always the 2nd half where I get the latakia sweet spot that floats my boat.

FWIW I loaded a Tsuge chimney 2/3 full with Butera Pelican this morning for the drive to work. That is some kick-butt smoke and the skinny little Tsuge finished it up in under 30-min. Nice power-to-time ratio.

I equate it to cutting myself a huge piece of rich chocolate cake....tastes soooooo good in the beginning...but finishing is rather hard.

Guess there are worse things in life, though!
