Re: When is Pipe Season?

It used to be that I only smoked a pipe during the winter. But that was when I only smoked aromatics. There is something special about putting on a coat and hat and going out on the deck to read while smoking a nice maple blend.

However, since I've gotten more serious about pipe smoking and discovered different blends, I pretty much smoke all year round. My seasonal smoking is now more what blends I smoke during what season rather than cigar vs. pipe. Here's what I prefer:

Winter - Aromatics, Latakia (smokey and heavy)

Summer - Virginias, VaPers, Virginia Blends (ie Haddo's, Exhausted Rooster)

Hot as hell and smoking isn't for me. When it's hot/hot, smoking ceases to be enjoyable and goes on vacation for a day, week, whatever. When we had a week or solid 98-100* here in July I stashed the gear.

Cigars seem nice to me in warm weather. Warm, DRY - not rainy or super-humid - weather. When it's way damp out I hate the cloying odor of cigar smoke on everything later in the day.

Pipes, on the other hand, always seem nice and are smoked without meteorological preconditions. Except maybe not in a hurricane.

Re: When is Pipe Season?

Pipes - late summer, fall, early spring
Cigars - late spring, summer

I pretty much take off the winter, since I don't like to freeze my butt off. The pipe is good for smaller smoking breaks, which is why I do it when it's still nice enough to be outside, but only for a little while. The cigar just requires so much more time, and therefore the environment needs to be comfortable for longer.

Pipes. Every day, all year long. Generally English and Balkan blends in the winter (very little snow here but rain by the bucket full) they just seem to taste better. Warmer weather is Virginia weather. Burley blends go good anytime.

Re: When is Pipe Season?

Year round for sure but I I did cut down from a couple bowls a day in the winter and spring to 1 bowl a day or one every other day. Becomes more of a chore when you have to sweat like crazy if you're going to smoke or go across town to get a cup of coffee and smoke inside. So for me- winter, fall and spring are the most enjoyable.. I've never been too cold to sit outside but it can definitely get too hot.
