perique

I really want to understand the flavors of perique. I understand cyprian latakia, due to my nightly dance with penzance. I am looking for a perique forward blend that will right off the bat speak to me and tell me what exactly perique is. I want to taste it, and know its characteristics. Could I get some recomendations of blends that are very perique "forward" ?

You could order some Perique and blend it into some of the tobacc's you have on hand....I'd recommend only doing this to Virginnias, though. This way, you'd could add as much or as little as you like and you could see how a Virginnia blend tastes compared to a Va/Per blend.

Just a thought!

For Perique blends, I've tried St James Flake and PS Luxry Navy Flake...to me, Perique simply adds a spicey kick to the mix and takes the flavour up a notch. Like adding pepper to your food. Stimulates the taste buds.

Re: perique

For a real Perique kick I would recommend Cornel & Diehl Kajun Kake.
For a little less kick but still a good one A & C Petersen Escudo Navy Deluxe.
For some on the lighter side - Esoterica Dorchester

Re: perique

GLP Fillmore is the most Perique-filled Va/Per that i've smoked. Some on here don't like it due to it having too much perique for their tastes.

Re: perique

SG St.James flake has a high perique content and is IMHO very good. Robert McConnell Scottish Cake is a good one as well as the old standbye Escudo.

You should smoke some straight Va and then follow it up the same day with a good Va/Per...it will be more pronounced and you'll see what perique does.

I love Va/pers!

Must be why it's my favorite.

Not one of mine, but it would be a good one to figure out the flavor of perique. That is all I can taste when I smoke it. I think I mainly like VA/Pers because of perique's ability to tame the VA but still leave the sweet and tangy flavor. For me, that is not the case with Fillmore.

Ditto on the St James Flake. McClelland has a tin in their "Personal Reserve" series called St James Woods and a VaPer designated #2015 in bulk, too. But Gawith St James Flake is smoother and just as tasty, IMHO.

That's a great article, but it's not that dire.
I asked Greg Pease about the Perique situation,
on another forum. He says there are several farms
producing and the supply looks pretty good.

so then, the two ounces I keep in the drawer for blending is enough. Phew. A world without perique would be as bad as a world without Tabasco Sauce of New Iberia, LA.
