Cobs

Hey guys. I love smoking a cob every so often, but I've found if I'm not careful enough to keep the heat toned down it tastes a bit funny. Like the finish on it burning. Also, when I'm towards the bottom of the bowl it starts tasting a bit like.....burning corn cob (strangely enough). Do you guys also experience this and is there anything you do to prevent it (besides the obvious like smoking cooler)?

Re: Cobs

You might be smoking it a little too hot? Sometimes mine does that as well. I tend to smoke my cobs pretty hot though since they don't gurgle lol. Usually the first smoke in a new cob has a bad taste though.

Yeah I do that as well lol. But I have noticed the first smoke or two are bad tasting. Oh well I'll just have to control my puffing speed

Re: Cobs

I think what you are tasting at the end is the wood stem inside the bowl burning. I just dump the bowl when I hit that point.

Re: Cobs

Indeed it's probably the stem burning that is giving you the funny taste.

That said, it might take a few smokes to adequately break in the pipe.

They don't smoke right unless you wear a straw hat and you are barefoot.

Call me hobo then, I have a cob in my rotation and it's a fine smoker. Most others here have at least one as well. And some only smoke a cob. It's not about class, it's about personal enjoyment.

Horribly tacky to say anything like that.

I dont smoke them a ton, but on the river or in places where a pipe might break/disappear, I prefer a cob. If you are smoking a pipe for any other reson than enjoyment, you are missing the whole point.

Re: Cobs

i don't own a cob right now, but would like to get some soon. I have always been a fan of the whole beat poet kinda life, so the hobo comment doesn't really change my want! haha.

do you guys frank fill into cobs? seems like it would be tricky.

My first cob was a gift from him, and they smoke damn fine. makes a guy wonder why they smoke brairs lol.

Ok Ok I love my new Stanwell brair LOL, but cobs smoke very nice.

Re: Cobs

I think every pipe has its place in a smokers rotation. My cobs are for aromatics or for trying out blends for the first time.
As for hobos, at least you don't have to pay bills!
