How do YOU pack your pipe?

This is what I've grown up with. 40 years worth, It's worked as I packed more I understood more of what I was attempting to do.
3 layer...sometimes rolls to four depending on size of bowl

none of the above

i just drop the tobac in (gravity fill) & only put enough pressure on it to keep it from falling out of the bowl-sometimes i have some room at the top & i'll do the same again, sometimes that's all it takes (depends on the cut of the tobac)-it's easy, goes well w/my slow sipping style & no tongue bit

I'm still learning the ropes and trying to figure out how to pack myself. So far I've had the best luck with the 3 layer method. I've tried the frank method, but I cant seem to keep it lit for very long

i use the "frankluke" method.

i fill the pipe to the top, tamp down to about 3/4 to sometimes half full, then add more till i get it about 1/8 of inch below the rim not the cause rim charring.. thats it, nothing fancy.

That's the general premise of the 3 layer method, but yeah, should have added a "other" option.

I've tried all methods and each has its' own merit. I find the three stage fill works best for me.

"Pack", loaded with implication, is a bad word for putting tobacco in a pipe. Packed pipes are not good to smoke. We need to remove the word pack from the pipe lexicon.

Pipes are filled, thoughtfully filled, not packed.

Pack a mule,
Pack a lunch,
Pack a bearing,
Pack a punch.

Fill a pipe.

How about "charge"? I charge my pipe using the frank method. I need to recharge my pipe.

Even better, how about you "Moo yer pipe".

I prefer the "3 layer Moo" method, although some pipe/baccy combinations give better results with the "Frank Moo" (hot VAs for example).

The best way for "Moo'ing" ones pipe is a personal preference of course. Should not be confused with "MoVing" ones pipe, as in from rack to pocket. Or "Ooh'ing" a pipe which one sees on a website for sale.

This is precisely what I do also... Gravity fill the pipe in my tobacco pouch til it's heaping over the top with perhaps about 1/2" of tobacco. Then I gently press it til level with the top and that's it. Light, puff for about 30 seconds - let it go out and then relight.

This gives me a nice easy draw with just the right amount of resistance. I also sip the pipe slow n easy. This gives a great smoke every time...
