I rub out flakes and let it dry. Then I fill my pipe. I have never had much luck with the fold method.

I always rub the flake out really well, and have had good success with it. I've never tried the fold method though, I've heard it takes some practice

Folding flakes is really the only way to go if your smoking outdoors on a windy day....I guess that's why you get so many Navy Flakes.

Their little animation has the flake loosely inserted and sticking out, then tamped down - effectively making the flake fall apart and get crammed in. Ideally the flake should burn vertically, as intact as humanly possible so it burn evenly down its length.

I started by following their method but it didn't work right (for me). Subsequent tongue lashings later (we are talking MacBaren here) - I figured out that the more vertical the flake, the better the burn.
