Old Cob - nice find in an antique store

Yesterday my wife and I spent a couple of hours searching through one of a handful of antique stores downtown. That's always a fun time whether or not I find something I want but that day I was lucky!

I found an old cob pipe for $6 that is in fairly decent shape - the bit is fairly scarred and bitten but otherwise the pipe is fine. I have no idea how old it is - it could be 1 year or 30 years old and I'd not know either way. The outside of the bowl feels textured - it's almost like snake scales that have dried a bit (I suppose that's just the texture of an older corncob pipe). The bowl is larger than any cob pipe I've ever seen (chamber is 1 x 1.75 inches) and feels like a perfect fit in my hand. If I were smoking outside in winter this pipe would not get lost in a gloved hand. The drugstore cobs I own look like lightweights at a heavyweight boxing match in comparison!

Also, there's some strange print on the bottom of the bowl. I can't tell if it's been printed there intentionally or if the former owner set the hot pipe down on a printed page. As near as I can make out the words are "quipped", "drator.", "Or any", and "uthor." On further reflection, though, I guess if he'd set a hot pipe down on paper the words would be mirror imaged instead of easily readable. Anyone having experience with older pipes or anyone having seen this type thing please feel free to advise me.

I've cleaned it up and now I'm looking forward to my first bowl in it later tonight!

Good feel in the hand on this pipe!

Very generous bowl.

Strange printing on the bottom.

What a fun find! I also found a good humidor for $20 at the same antique shop.

Nice looking cob. I'm not big on estate cobs myself
For that price couldn't you get a new one?

I could've bought a new one but this one just caught my eye. I'm not sure why, exactly, other than the feel in the hand is great and it looks a lot more interesting than the drugstore cobs I've got. It is my first estate cob and I hope it smokes well.

That store had a half-dozen other estate pipes - all briars. I'll be giving them another look this weekend after payday.

Actually, I think I'll fill a bowl right now and light up - no time like the present! But what to smoke ....

Good lookin cob. I have two cobs and the only thing dislike about them is the size of the bowls.
Happy clouds..Brian....

I have seen that style of Cob Pipe many times before, the style of shank/stem and bit and the way the bowl is finished. I cannot recall exactly, but I have no doubts that it is probably from the 1970's! That's just my $.02!

1970s huh? This pipe may be as old as me!

I smoked it last night - that pipe smokes great! The bit must have had a hairline crack in it because when I gripped it in my teeth to free my hands the bit cracked. It's still smokable but I'll have to get another bit soon. Other than that no complaints at all. I really like that style compared to the other two cobs I have.

I've never had to repair a pipe before - what websites can you guys recommend for ordering a replacement bit?

You can order replacement bits off of the Missouri Meerschaum website, Google it, they have a mail in order form you print out. It may not fit being a different company - but if it's too small you could make it work by carving a little cork "gasket".

Thanks! I checked their site - I'm going to call them tonight after I get home and measure the bit.
