What does strength really mean in this "sport"?

Im smoking Davidhoff English mixture atm. The first time i tried i I did get a lil bit sick, had to lay down even. I still think I can feel some less than plesant sensation in my throat when i smoke this. But its ok if I take it slow. Very good mixture tho! 4 of 5 stars in my book!

It means it is high in nicotine. Most people think of pipes as mild-mannered devices but they can provide much more of a nicotine punch than a cigar.

The smoke should never "pass through" your throat to irritate it (unless you regurgitate it through your nose). Pipe smoke is "normally" not inhaled. The beauty of the pipe is that you can put it down and walk away when the room starts spinning - then return to it after you get your legs back

Re: noob vocabulary Q: Strength?

strength??
there are lots of pipe tobaccos that i can't smoke a small bowlful of, yet i can smoke a Party Lusi withouth a problem.

Synjeco's website has some decent listings with their tobaccos and give a 'strength-meter' with them all...
synjeco (then find the tobacco section, click on Gawith Hoggarth & Co, then check out some of their flakes and twists for how strong they are). i would put a direct link, but they've got some funky html mojo going on.

lets see if this link works. http://www.synjeco.com/pata/taba/jjeo/tab/3023.htm#SLB sliced brown twist.

What does that mean? Isn't pipe tobacco nicotine absorbed through the mucous membranes?

Re: noob vocabulary Q: Strength?

Is there some objective measure of nicotine amounts? Like mg/gram or something like that?

That is interesting. Is there a distinct difference between different blends? Or do the manufacturers just use a generic listing?

I wonder how often they would have to test for nicotine content. I would imagine it could differ from harvest to harvest by quite a bit.
