Little poll: Tins or Bulk?

It seems that most of you guys talk about tins. I keep trying my shops mixtures and am never really satisfied. Now I have tins on the way to try as well as some to start my cellar.

Is your main smoke in bulk? Is it a local mix?

I guess I am still searching for "my" mixes.

I like both. I think you will find that most pipe smokers probably do bulk but most of them don't post here. You should do a trade and exchange some of your local brands for someone else's.

Re: Little poll: Tins or Bulk?

Personally I prefer tins to "cellar". Either 50gm (2oz) or 100gm (3.5oz), the only exception I make is for GLP Fillmore upto 8oz tins.

Tins are much easier to store and deal with. While bulk purchases do work out cheaper, you also need to get mason jars and spend the time and effort to jar and label things. Tins get thrown onto a shelf and its done. Guess I'm just lazy

Smaller tins are convenient when it comes time to smoke their contents. A small tin will usually last just long enough for its contents to remain "fresh" within the tin itself. When empty, the tins get tossed (or recycled).

Re: Little poll: Tins or Bulk?

I say tins, but only because I don't smoke often enough in order to justify bulk purchases. Plus, there are still many brands/styles I want to try before I can say that I've found "the one". So, with that in mind, tins seem to fit the bill. However, if there was something that I absolutely loved, and it was available in bulk, then that would make sense. Otherwise, I would just keep trying different stuff from the tins. But, that's just me

Re: Little poll: Tins or Bulk?

I don't bother with blends from the B&M. The ones I did try seemed unsatisfying.... maybe a little low in the nic. I stick to name brands and purchase according to my tastes and availability. Peter Stokkebye is only available in bulk so small or large quantity I buy in bulk. Other blends I buy tins and if I like them I order bulk later on. Some brands are only available in tins. I like to have a tin to smoke from and a bulk container to refill my tin.

I prefer to buy bulk and store in various sizes of Mason jars. I feel confident that if I open a jar I can take out what I want for the short term, and reseal the jar till I need more.
I am also trying to cellar tobacco to let it age, and for a “rainy day”.

Fortunately most of the tobacco I prefer comes in bulk.

Re: Little poll: Tins or Bulk?

I've been wondering the same things, I have 2oz (-one bowl) of tobacco to my name, a local blend. It's pretty good, but it's a wet, sticky, aromatic. However that seems to be about all that's available around here. so I've been looking online and reading reviews to see what I might like. I think for the time being I'll stick to 50g tins, in all likelyhood, as I don't want to commit to a lot of one blend and then not like it

A lot of the etailers will sell you 2 oz samples of most of their bulk tobaccos. Thats a good way to check out a lot of different blends without putting out a lot of $$$ for something you might not like.

Of course when you find something you like, 2 oz sure doesnt seem like much.

Re: Little poll: Tins or Bulk?

It is not like the taxes on tobacco are going down or that any new legislation is going to be favorable. The reality is our favorite brands are in danger... not of being outlawed but of being ran out of business. If you have something you like that is in tins that is also available in bulk you might want to get some.

This is what I do. Most of the stuff that I cellar is bulk and usually Samuel Gawith blends from here:

http://www.smokingpipes.com/tobacco/...bulk/index.cfm

And some of the Hearth & Home blends from here:

Re: Little poll: Tins or Bulk?

Tins and bulk for me. Rarely local mixes though.

Most of my purchases (bulk/tin) come from smokingpipes and pipesandcigars. Holts and Black Cat, in Philly, on occasion.

Re: Little poll: Tins or Bulk?

I buy in bulk by the pound at minimum and store it in large Mason jars. I've got about 13 large Mason jars packed with my favorite blend.

I buy tins simply because I can use the tins for so much more after the tobacco has been used...

Re: Little poll: Tins or Bulk?

It's mostly been tins.

Doesn't matter that much to me as long as it's good tobacco.
