Meerschaum troubles

Now I haven't had my meer for long (a little over a week), but I was just smoking a nightly bowl and noticed something while cleaning it afterwards. The inside of the bowl had an odd looking spot but I didn't think anything of it at the time.

So after a week of smoking and charring the rim (me being a rookie smoker and this being my first Meer) I notice that right above the odd light spot there is a tiny, what looks like a, crack on the rim, needless to say I am not pleased. It starts at the rim and goes a bit down into the carving just below the rim.

So I guess back to my cheap no-name briars.

Re: Meerschaum troubles

sorry for double posting but I grabbed pictures of the "soft spot" on the inside of the Meer, the crack is too small to get a decent picture of but the soft spot leads up to it. Sorry if the pics are a bit big. Already emailed the seller with the pics and an explaination.

Re: Meerschaum troubles

My fave has had a hairline crack in it for a while. There's no good reason why it cracked but, at least, it smokes fine. Meers crack for the obvious reasons (dropped, bumped, caked, overheated) and they crack for the not-so-obvious reasons (an invisible flaw inside the clay); many smoke to a ripe, old age and many do not. If I had one carved and signed by Pablo Picasso I probably wouldn't smoke it.

All the rest of them...

Welp, the seller offered me store credit or a replacement pipe of equal value if I send it back. So hurrah, now I just need to decide on one of their other meers of similar value..choices, choices

I'll prolly just get a smooth pipe instead of one with some sort of ornate design.

That's a good deal. I got the same offer from my B&M but he didn't have another like it. I'm living with the fracture until a chunk falls out.
