Tried aromatics, I like them but am pretty picky. Tried a couple of English blends (latakia)... maybe not my cup of tea but i'll still give them a chance. Tried several different Virginians, I think this is my smoke. Something about them I just really enjoy. The first being Butera's Matured Ribbon, I really enjoyed this smoke (very sweet to me). Then came Stonehaven which was purely delicious, followed by Tinder Box Reserve 1928 (which i'm still deciding whether or not it's actually an aromatic).

So yeah, I have a taste for Virginian tobacco and selective aromatics so if anyone wants to suggest some quality V. blends that you think a newbie would enjoy, spit them out.

I'm a big fan of the McClelland VAs.

You could try Dan Tobaccos Da Vinci - its a VA topped with red wine (think port wine) - Pretty tasty.

Have you tried Orientals yet? I have only tried one true oriental....Samsun...by McClelland. Has a nice nutty sweet flavor. You might try those too.

If you liked Stonehaven (and who doesn't?) Full Virginia Flake by S. Gawith will fill the bill as your transitional VA and, perhaps, your favored VA for life. That is a natural fact. Find someone who sez it sucks and you've found a cigarette-smoking Folgers drinker.

If you try it and it doesn't do the job, bill me for the tin and pass it to a new(er)guy.

I really wanna get my hands on a sample of Da Vinci before i buy a tin. I already made the mistake of buying a tin of a tobacco i thought i would love and now have a whole tin of something that's just "ok".

Stonehaven had a heavy wine taste to me so I think i've found my "wine tobacco"... but my knowledge is ignorance now b/c it's really the only one i've tried that taste like wine, i just like it a whole lot. If it's anything like Stonehaven, i'd probably love it.

Presbyterian Mixture has oriental tobacco in it if i'm not mistaken. I tried a bowl of that the other day and it wasn't bad, just wasn't amazing.

I bought 10 tins on your recommendation, Dan. I'll say I don't like it. You owe me $110.23...

Actually, I like both FVF and Best Brown Flake by Gawith. And if you want an aromatic... Firedance Flake is BBF with blackberry brandy topping... it's good too (even though it will make your pipe smell like a potpourri bowl).

What's the biggest difference b/t BBF and FVF that you would note as obvious?

I like BBF better... FVF seems a little harder to smoke to me. I dunno if "harder" is the right word... maybe "demanding" fits better. And FVF seems a little stronger, both in flavor and nicotine content.

You'll never sell those 10 tins if you keep talking bad about the stuff, Bobb-o.

Re: For a Virginian enthusiasts, you would recommend...

I'm all about the virginias over here so here we go:

Samuel Gawith: Best brown flake, and full virginia flake are great straight virginia as has been suggested BBF and FVF are the same leaf the difference is how long the are steam. BBF is a lighter tobbaco. Medium virginia is even lighter still; light does not imply is not tasty. If you want something with a light a topping try firedance for something fruity if you like chocolate, chocolate flake is the way to go. Are you looking for something different? Try Grousemoor. Want something with perique? St James flake, my friend.

McClelland: 2010, 2035, 5100, 5105, any christmas cheer, and dark star. Again if you want something with a light topping try 2000 and 5120; their toppings are light and fruity. 2015 if you want perique.

Astley's 109, Dan veermeister (do yourself a favour and get a tin davinci),
pipesandcigars LJ hreat virginia. Again, like chocolate? like perique? H. Gawith LA. flake mmm mmm. Looks like you have your work cut out for ya. Get to it.
