What the heck have I got myself into?
I started this whole cigar/pipe thing just 3 or 4 months ago. Today, while out on a business trip (I am in Stl for 2 days) I decide to stop by a local smoke shop. It was amazing. It was a family run operation. Opened in 1917. Had tons of knowledge. The cigar stock was not as immaculate as others but the experience was well worth it.
I picked up my 5 pipe today. I have a Sumerler, Butz Choquin, a small meere (with a pegasus), a corn cob, and now a Vuillard. It fits nicely in my hand. Also, when I asked the owner about my tongue bite, he associated it with my newness and the fact that I smoke aromatics. He gave me a lovely blend called "Vintage Virginia." He ships world wide. He gave me a few other plugs for free to just "try out." A wonderful experience. All in all, it was worth the $100. He gave me a list of most of their brands so I can call and order more if I need to. Oh, the place is called John Dengler "Tobacconists since 1917." It is located on main street in St. Charles MO. I highly recomend this place. Frank |

Re: What the heck have I got myself into?
I think we've all asked ourselves that question at one time or another...whether it be cigars or pipes.
![]() Looks like you had a nice day and sounds like a fine tobacco shop. Tongue bite can be associated with several things including, but not limited to aromatics; and it might benefit you to do a little research about it "down the road". I've had my tongue "blasted" many times Glad to have you with us in the Pipe Forums at Club Stogie, Frank! |

Re: What the heck have I got myself into?
I just love places like that.
You just feel good and they treat you like you are welcome! It's great when you find a place of that sort. it's doesn't matter if they don't have a lot because they are always happy to order it for you and always happy to have your business. Enjoy what you bought and let us know how it is. Cheers! |

Re: What the heck have I got myself into?
Yeah, this place was amazing. I guess the guy who started it died this last January. But the current owner is that guys son-in-law. He started working there before he got married. So he has been doing it for over 25 years himself. They blend their own tobacco. They even use an old hand crank register. I loved it. Did I over pay for the pipe? $80...Maybe, but I didnt care. I got a free couple ounces and and bought a few more and some bit saver things. But the guy was awesome to talk to. He wasnt trying to push me to buy a more expensive pipe at all. He actually pointed out some good $30-40 ones. He also had this early 1900's Abe lincoln pipe with a removable top hat. I guys the original owner (this guys father in law) had thousands of pipes and they are in the process of shadowboxing many of them.
Truly a wonderful experience. On a side note, everyone says how cheap it is to smoke a pipe. I dont smoke all that often but I do buy a decent amount of pipes (About 1 per month. Ha!). So it is not all that cheap to me. Frank |
