Altadis

Hello,

New to the pipe side of things. Only tried a few so far. Stumbled upon Altadis #10 Natural cavendish (which I believe is considered an aroumatic?) and really liked it.

I ordered a couple more Altadis bulk blends as well as some more #10 Natural Cavendish.

Just wondering what the general opinion is on Altadis? I was amazed by the number of blends availble by this manufacture and the many others just on pipesandcigar.com.

I am limited to what I can try due to the fact that I have to mail order and am currently deployed in Afghanistan.

Anyone know of a good sampler pack to get a variety of brands?

TIA,

Aaron

I'm no help for the altadis but here's something for possible future use... www.tobaccoreviews.com. Lots and lots of tobaccos and lots and lots of reviews. Pretty interesting. On the other hand, if you like the Altadis, it doesn't much matter what anyone else thinks of it. Enjoy it! But hey, we can't help our curiousity, can we? Hence, the link I provided.

Re: Altadis

I enjoyed a few Altadis blends when I first started smoking pipes. They tend to be really goopy, and I tired pretty quickly of them. They started tasting waxy to me, but they were very tasty until I found something better.

They give a lot of free samples away. If you haven't found it >>HERE<< is a link to Pipesandcigars.com free Altadis sample page.

Thanks for the heads up I now have much reading to do.

Just wondering if anyone knows of any comprehensive pipe tobacco rating system similar to cigar insider rates cigars on a number scale?

Re: Altadis

I hate to say it but it is my opinion, as well as the opinion of many others, that the Altadis blends are pretty much the bottom of the barrel as far as pipe tobacco goes.

Most people discover them when they first start smoking because aromatics are usually the first blend choice with beginners. They cover sub-par tobacco with enough flavoring and PG to choke a pig. They smell great and have a little bit of taste but are rather tame which is what most people want when they first start out. Most people move on from those rather quickly but some stay with them for years.

You will find that at a lot of tobacco shops their "house" bulk blends are just renamed Altadis blends.

Like it was stated above. If you like them, then smoke them!!! This is just my opinion.

What he said

Altadis is relatively easy to find, most B&M's simply rename it as their own. They are cheaper. But they are loaded with PG and will gunk up your pipe in no time. If the wallet can stand it, try a few "premium" tinned blends.

Once you get access to the Trading forum - you can join the Newbie Trade and get a wide variety of good stuff to try out.

Re: Altadis

I think you do a disservice to the niceness of the smoke of the ALTADIS tobacco.
I enjoy many of their blends on a regular basis.
Nothin shabby about enjoying a nice ALTADIS smoke.
There are many other baccys that are real nice smoking too.

Re: Altadis

I have only smoked one blend from Altidis called "VooDoo Queen" and I like it alot.

It is a mixture of virginia, perique and a very small portion of latakia. I normally don't like latakia much but in this blend it is used sparingly and it's a very good smoke.

As far as other blends I don't know, but I like this alot and would buy more in a second. It's not goopy at all btw.

Re: Altadis

Well my order finally arrived today from cigarand pipes.com I now have more of the #10 natural cavendish which I have smoked and like. The other two I ordered are golden cavendish and butter rum. I will have to report back on these.

Two estate pipes I bought on ebay also arrived, so I will have something to try the new blends in once they dry from cleaning.

The only Altadis I can truly suggest one try is the Fox & Hound.
