You can't go wrong with FVF. Smoking it while I'm typing Check tobaccoreviews web site. Anything with 4 stars is usually worth a try.

So what is all the rave I keep hearing about in this Escudo? I mean, I see it's made nearly everyone's cellar and i'm not sure what it's all about.

Oh, and I also noticed Scottish Cake if anyone has opinions on that.

North....no, no south...wait, east...ugh, this is so difficult, west? I just can't pick a direction. lol!

Anyways, you can't go wrong with Dunhill tins. Peterson makes a few good baccys too. Irish Flake is probably the best. McCellend has some good stuff. Christmas Cheer is well liked. Frog Morton on the town is good too. Try out the Frog Morton Series.

I haven't counted but, I'd guess, 40 or more over here. I could run out of everything else and go on but - no Escudo? That would be an impossible situation.

Balkan Sobranie is long dead - the age of yenidje tobak died along with all the people in one purge after another. Maybe it'll come back one day but the betting sez long odds. One bright boyed coined our day as the "golden age" of virginia pipe tobak. We are in it. Better look around and see what's what 'cause there is no reason for it to last forever. Escudo is a benchmark in the minds of many. As with most virginias, the nuances can be lost if smoked too hard and too fast. And your tongue can be lost too.

If only this forum had a moderator that knew something about pipe tobacco maybe he could 'splain it better.

In the must have category I would recommend

McConnell Scottish Cake

&

Rattray's Marlin Flake

Stokkebye Luxury Bullseye Flake { this is my generic substitue for Escudo since it's cheaper}

McConnells Scottish Cake is excellent, as is Rattray's Marlin Flake.
i can tolerate the Stokkebye LBF, but prefer the LNF (luxury navy flake). the LBF tastes a little too much like hay and i have to be hankering for it.

others i'd add to the list of FVF, McConnells Scottish Cake, Rattrays Marlin Flake are:
Reiner Long Golden Flake (a bit pricey, but damn good)
Esoterica Dorchester

i wouldn't waste my time with McClellands Dark Star, if you look at the reviews done on this site for it, most ppl found it more trouble than it was worth.
most ppl don't groove on MacBarens Virginia's very much due to tongue bite.
i smoked a bowl of Butera Matured Ribbon on the way into work this morning, and was pretty complex for a VA smoke - had just started to get smooth/creamy when i got to work and had to let it die out.

Well, it doesn't really taste like chocolate (at least to me)...it's just an aromatic with a pleasant flavor and smokes pretty cool...I think the "chocolate" in the name comes from the room note...the S/O says it smells like a chocolate cake baking in the oven when she walks out on the porch and I'm smoking it...
