Going to buy a few tins in the near future, give me direction...

So yeah, i plan on my next purchase being a number of tins. I don't like to spend a ton of money so I guess you could say my ceiling is around 30 bucks. I'm a fan of Virginians and I have enjoyed several Boswell Aromatics i've tried. But I'd like to stick to some quality Virginians for this purchase.

So, i'm a loser and have to ask everyone else what I want before I buy what I want for ME. Sounds kinda off right? I guess i just don't like ending up w/ an entire tin of tobacco that i don't like (like my experience w/ a recent MacBaren blend), so I like to do my research and ask my questions... a lot.

FVF
Dark Star
Blackwoods Flake
MacBaren Mature Virginian
Butera Vintage Dark Stoved
Butera Matured Ribbon (which i've tried)

...are a few that have recently caught my attention. Here's the thing: The best case scenario is that I like the blend, in which case i would order a total of TWO for that particular blend; one to keep open and smoke and another to age. But I can't get past the fear that i'll be stuck w/ an entire tin of something I just don't like all that much. I guess it's just always hard for me to order an entire tin of tobacco of something that i've never tried before (perhaps I should stick w/ bulk samples?). So... thoughts? Opinions? Condemnations?

I can't comment on your choices above, as I haven't tried them. I do have a tin of Blackwoods Flake in my stash but haven't cracked it yet.

Being a noob on this site, I'm not sure I've got all the facts but I read one post where the poster had traded some tobacco with other primates here, and I thought that sounded like a cool idea. Maybe if you bought some you didn't care for, you could post such and find a trading partner. I have a tin of McClellands Christmas Cheer 1995 that's unopened and I wouldn't mind trading for something I like better.

Just a thought. BTW, was the MacBaren blend Virginia #1 that you tried and didn't like? I've often recommended that to aromatic smokers that want to try a Virginia that's sweet for starters. Sometimes it catches on and sometimes not!

I found flake tobac a little difficult to handle. But the couple of bowls I got to work were awesome!

The only one on your list that I would choose (based on my preferances) would be the FVF. You should also really consider Escudo and Best Brown Flake.

To me, the McClellands are too much trouble to try and dry and keep lit and the MacBaren bites my tongue way too much. I haven't had those Butera blends but of the ones that I have had they were okay.

The MacB HH Mature VA is a nice light VA with a decent flavor is puffed slow. Speed up and the flavor disappears. GREAT blend for learning the pipe with.

Don't sweat the FVF bud, you'll be trying that soon enough! (and more then likely buying some!)

Negative. It was Honey & Chocolate. Steer clear unless you like self-inducing the hiccups.

No thanks to you, right?

I have a strong feeling i'll end up purchasing more. I just wanted to try it first to decide whether or not to buy a tin for aging, or crack it open and smoke like a madman.

Try the Butera Pelican. This stuff rocks! As for the salvia, jeez, let's not get that started in here again

I'll double down on the FVF and Pelican. Toss in some Escudo, like tha man said, and you have a triumverate of three genres whose quality cannot be denied. I note that Pelican isn't for everyone - it's intense - but that and the Escudo box the FVF neatly.

Put a pouch of Carter hall to the left of these three and a pound of 1988 Balkan Sobranie to the right and that covers everything.

My last experience w/ a chocolate tobacco wasn't near so good. But i've been hearing about this one more and more. The only problem is that i've heard (briefly) that they may be discontinuing it? I honestly do not have a credible source on that so I hope I don't scare anyone.
