Does Cigar Smoking Affect Pipe Smoking?

Helloo.

I'm a cigar smoker and I've been dabbling in pipes - I have a Meerschaum and a corncob and picked up some Butternut Burley and Anniversary Kake. But my main issue with this hobby so far, other than learning how to pack it and keep a cherry, is tasting anything. The smell is divine, but I find that I can't really taste much at all out of a pipe. I often find myself going through a bowl of BB, then, dissatisfied, lighting up a cigar and finding much more enjoyment.

If I put a moratorium on cigar smoking and just smoked pipe for a week or two, would I notice a difference? I don't really want to do that, but if it means I can enjoy the investment I've made in the pipe and smoke indoors, then I'm down for giving it a whirl.

Thanks.

Try an eglish or balkan. They are much bolder in flavor.

I find I can hardly taste aromatics at all. Great smell but no flavor like you describe.

Try some rope tobaccos; Sweet rum twist, blackXX, brown rope #4. They tend to be much bolder and stronger.

I would think you would notice a difference but it sounds like you might need a tabak that is stronger in nicotene. Also try for a cool light. The goal in pipe smoking is to get the tobacco to smoulder rather than having a glowing cherry. The cooler it burns the more flavor you will have.

I started in cigars, went straight to english blends and love the taste! I still can't really smoke aromatics worth $hit. They taste bland to me. Either english blends, or Virginia/Perique blends; both have a distinctive taste.

Sorry for asking lame questions, but what exactly is an english blend?
I've heard great things about them, but I wouldn't have a clue what to ask for at a smoke shop.

Thanks

Here is a quote from JRCigars.com:

Quote:
ENGLISH BLEND - Up until 1986, additives were not allowed in tobaccos made in England. For this reason, those tobaccos were referred to as English blends even though non-aromatic tobaccos were manufactured all over the world. Today a true English blend is considered to be any blend containing Oriental tobaccos, most notably Latakia. The most common English blend consists of Latakia, Virginia, and Perique. Depending on how much Latakia is mixed into the blend ultimately determines the overall strength of the mixture, described as a mild-, medium-, or full-bodied English blend.

Re: Does Cigar Smoking Affect Pipe Smoking?

nothing wrong w/smoking both, fair amount of us do i think-that being said, i was told early on that i'd never taste the full range of tobac flavors while smoking cigars & vice versa, i've found this to be true-when i go a wk w/o a stogie, i notice more of the subtle flavors that i usually miss-thing is, i still enoy both, even when i smoke 'em in the same day-not to mention i like 'em both too much to pick!

Re: Does Cigar Smoking Affect Pipe Smoking?

I definitely think if you put the cigars on hold in a few days you will taste alot more of the pipe flavors. I know since i have been smoking the pipe pretty much exclusively when ever I have had a cigar (only a couple times since!) it killed my taste buds for the pipe! Especially if you smoke strong cigars.

I had a LFD Lancero at the B&M on sunday and while i LOVE that cigar to death it was murder on taste buds for the next couple of bowls..

ETA: Ask for Penzance! You WILL taste it, and probably love it being a cigar smoker!

Does Cigar Smoking Affect Pipe Smoking?

Only if you're smoking both of them at the same time...

Re: Does Cigar Smoking Affect Pipe Smoking?

Cool, thanks a lot guys. This is relieving news for the most part. I guess I'll grab some English blend(s) and a VaPer and see how it goes with that. Glad to hear my affliction is shared and curable, haha.

Just stuff with latakia-y and periquey, eh? Latakia it is...I'll check out Penzance and some kind of Balkan blend as well.
