Thoughts on a newbies tobacco order?

Hi all,
New member here. This is my second post, first one was in the introduction thread.

I am about to order a pipe and some tobacco and would be glad if a somewhat more experinced smoker would be able to share his or her thoughts on my order.

For now I´m smoking my first and only pipe, a decent billiard, together with the only tobacco I own, McConnell´s Scottish Flake, which I really like. As said above I´m now about to place an order for a new pipe, a Peterson Donegal 150, and some tobacco. For now I´m not that interested in the aromatic blends, I want to try some latakia and non-latakia non-aromatic blends. The blends I´m thinking about at the moment is SG Full Virginia Flake and Squadron Leader.

Any thoughts on this order? What more tobaccos should I add (for the moment I guess I don´t want to order more than four tins of tobacco)?

Btw, great forum

Re: Thoughts on a newbies tobacco order?

Get some (this order would come from pipesandcigars.com):

- BCA (Lane)
- Anniversary Kake (H&H)
- Stonehaven (Esoterica)
- Reserve 1928 (TinderBox) [if you can find it, i had trouble]
- And any of the Boswell blends, but you have to get those separately (Dutch Treat, Xmas Cookie, and No Bite DeLite are wonderful to me)

Go ahead and pull the trigger on that SG Full Virginia too. Some suggestions from a noob to a noob. Hope that helps.

Welcome aboard!

I'm a huge fan of English blends (Latakias). Some I would recommend considering are:
- Squadron Leader: A trusted steed in the Latakia realm
- Dunhill Nightcap
- Frog Morton Series: Smoking pipes offers a great sampler bundle of these.
- Esoterica Penznace (sp?): I've never had this, but it's popular
- G.L. Odyssey

You started with McConnell's Scottish Flake and you want us to believe you're a newbie???? You may lack a little experience with various tobaccos but you're no newbie! That 'baccy is one of my long time faves.

I'd say your current order is a good one. At some point you might want to try Dunhill 965 and some Rattray's Hal O' The Wynd (former being latakia based and the latter a virginia) but there's plenty of time!

Second post on the forum and already accused of lieing

I´m not that new to tobacco. As many other swedish men my daily drug of choice is snus, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snus. For the last three years or so I´ve been smoking a couple of cigars a week.

Apart from that, I really appreciate your thoughts on the tobacco. Bear in mind, as I live in Europe it can be costly for me to buy tobacco from the US.

Re: Thoughts on a newbies tobacco order?

FVF and Squadron leader are two great ones I think! Maybe add a corn cob pipe to the order for backup, but you would be in good shape with two great tobaccos with those two!

I"m not at all familiar with the European market but both Rattrays and Dunhill are produced in Europe so that might make a difference. Good luck! Welcome to the wonderful world of pipes!

Re: Thoughts on a newbies tobacco order?

Thanks all for your replies. I´m going to buy both the FVF and the SL. In a week or to I´m going to place an order at Frenchy´s so I´ll get the cobb then.

The shop I´m going to buy from doesn´t have many of the blends you recommend but he has J. F. Germain & Son and Peterson. Apart from Sam Gawith that brand looks interesting to me. Any Germain- or Peterson-recommendations out there?

/Johan

Re: Thoughts on a newbies tobacco order?

I haven't tried it myself, but I eyed a small rectangular tin of Germain & Son Special Latakia Flake at my local B&M. I looked it up and found the reviews here: http://tobaccoreviews.com/blend_deta...PHA=S&TID=1743 There are far more good reviews then bad ones.

I think I will pick this one up on my next trip there and give it a shot. If they have that one you might try it..
