Re: briar break in
Read the FAQ stickied at the top of the page and then ask questions. Great information in there.

Re: briar break in
Agreed. Half bowls are fine if you're not going to smoke a full one all the way down. At times I'll go back to the same bowl of tobacco for more than one sitting.
When done, I'll just give the inside of the bowl a light "swish" with the pipe cleaner...nothing real thorough. Let your pipe dry out and repeat! |

Re: briar break in
The only break in technique I really use is to smoke it evenly and as cool as possible, then when done I cover the bowl with my hand and shake the ashes about inside to help coat the walls of the bowl. After the first 3-4 bowl, cake is on the rise, and I can smoke care free!

I also heard that it is best to use a more "wet" tobacco as to help it cake the walls when burning.

Re: briar break in
I think their are many theories out there on how to do this. My opinion, take everyone's recommendation into consideration and use what method works best for you.
The key is to burn slow and cool throughout the 1/2 or full bowl. Make sure to let it dry completely before lighting a new bowl (a day or two normally). I recently broke in a new briar and I elected to do full bowls slowly. I was careful to not let it go out, but just the same didn't fight to keep it lit either. I'll leave the little bit of ash/unburned baccy at the end of the bowl and clear it out before I smoke the next go around. Congrats on the new pipe and enjoy it! |

Re: briar break in
There is some wisdom in trying to smoke x-many initial bowls only a third- to half full so there's progressively more cake in the lower section, creating a conical development. I was never that patient.
I will say that smaller bowls from the get go does keep me more aware I'm smoking a new pipe and, thus, I tend to smoke slower with more attention paid to not overheating the pipe.

I apologize oa457, apparently some took my comments as rude or non-helpful. I was trying to refer you to the FAQ because as a new member (I think you had 1-5 posts when you posted this question) you may not have had an opportunity to review it yet. Specifically in answer to your question in the FAQ look here and here. Hopefully that information helps you. What I mean by read and then ask questions was that you may be able to get a lot of general info and then ask specific questions about that info. The answers you get may be a little more helpful to you. Sorry to dredge up a little older thread, but I didn't notice the negative RG I received (from another member, not from oa457) until today and since no one posted in the thread objecting to my suggestion, I thought everything was taken the way I had meant it. Again, I apologize to any offense I may have caused to oa457 or any other CS members. It is truly a great group of BOTLs and BOTBs on here. Happy smoking! ![]()

I contacted the member who dinged my RG and asked for an explanation, he is a great BOTL on here and when I called his attention to it, he looked into the situation. It appears that he dinged me by accident when he meant to ding someone else for another purpose and thread. We have worked it out and there is no hard feelings. Thank you all for your kind comments and concern over this issue. -Tyler
