I can't say that I have tried a filter pipe but your post may cause me to lay claim to one.

I have a Ropp that I put Sav filters in. It is an aro pipe and the filters work well enough I believe you could smoke fresh lawn clippings in it.

Hey smoking grass is illegal unless you have glaucoma.

Re: My humble opinion re filter pipes

Big Bens use a ceramic based fitler that doesn't impart any flavor to the smoke. In my experience all it does absorbs excess moisture and smooths out the tobacco experience.

Another "filter" pipe is a Kirsten. While there is not actual filter insert, the moisture that collects in the radiator (stem) naturally attracts particulates and excess junk. I've found if I use a clean (ie nothing in the stem to catch gunk) I will put in a few drops of water to collect residues and it works almost as well as my true filter pipes. The added benefit of a Kirsten is I can smoke many pipes in a day and never worry about souring the briar.

That being said the Kirsten is definitely an acquired taste in a way. Time in the military made me use it more than I otherwise would have and only because of that did I really come to appreciate how good they can be.

Used the balsa Savinelli inserts but I wasn't as happy with it as either of the aforementioned systems.
