My humble opinion re filter pipes

Tonite I cleaned up a filty old DrPerl estate I got off the internet. Its my first filter pipe. After inserting a BigBen filter I filled her with Fribourg&Treyer Special Brown flake. The packing method was a straight foward fold and insert. I put the fold so its in the "muzzle", and lit ...

The first 1/4 of the smoke was without much flavour, but I kept puffing. I did notice how mild and moisture free the smoke was; like a good woman, sweet and hardly noticable!

But then it started to shift, the virginia sweetness came out stronger like I have not had them experinced before. Still dry and so mild! *heaven* This kept on, and increasing, all to the bottom of the bowl (heel). I never had a pipe stay this dry, and this in a pipe that is bare wood, seller having scraped it out totally, I find very remarkable indeed!

My verdict on filter pipes is that they are very good for mild tobaccos, requried even perhaps!? The last thing i noticed was that the pipe started getting a fine cake even from this first smoke.

I think that alot of the moisture problems in pipes generally is from exhaled smoke! The filter blocks it both ways. Try them!

YES!
There's a lot to be sensed with the filtered smoke

As a filter fan, for sure the best plus is any moisture problems errased, but they can also be good for strong baccy's like Irish Flake when you need to calm the smoke down a little...dub...good review

I like the balsa system in my Savinellis and even use the same filters in my Grabows for bite prone VAs. They can help take the edge off and prevent wet nastiness.

The only ones I have are Savs.
I like em. Tried em with the adaptor
and didn't notice much difference.
The only drawback is ya have to take
em apart to get a pipecleaner through.

Does anyone have experience with a Brigham filter? I was about to get a nice Brigham pipe but I waited too long and it was gone. It seems like an interesting filter system though. One is able to pass a filter through and the filters are re-usable a few times.

What style of filter is the Big Ben? Charcoal, paper or Balsa?

Sounds like the filter worked out well for you, maybe for kicks I'll try one in my Sav., most folks I've talked with say they dont use them, more reason for me to try

I gotta tell you, things mut be a little different in Sweden, no disrespect intended... but..... mild and moisture free are Not how I would describe my dream girl. Although your analogy did crack me up...

Cheers

I've got 3 Brighams and generally like them. Although, since I've become a more experienced pipe smoker, I tend not to go to them much. I initially allocated them to aromatics as they dry up the smoke somewhat...but I don't smoke wet goopy stuff anymore and I don't seem to smoke wet in general these days.

That said, the filter system on them is great!!! They're reuseable (I can get 6 to 8 smokes from one filter) as you rinse them with hot water after each smoke. They remove moisture really well without impacting the taste too much. I could never get a pipe cleaner down them...the filter hole is pretty small for that...but maybe that's just me. But, there really is no need to do so as it traps all the moisture. Simply wait till the pipe has cooled to remove, rinse and air dry.

Ah, well maybe I'll get one soon, I need to try a filter pipe at least once, might as well be from a Canadian company. Good to know about the rinsing bit, I thought it was just a gimmick and that rinsing wouldn't really work.

I just smokes a bowl of IF for the first time ever. Its a biter I tell ya! Even thru a filter it bit my tounge. I dried it first too, but still this need to have a speed limit (puffs per hour - pph) on the tin!

The flavor was nice and mild VA tho, real nice!

Re: My humble opinion re filter pipes

I use a filter in my sav, which I've dedicated to my aros. Seems a shame though as I prefer not to smoke the aros as much anymore. It is a good pipe. I like to throw filters out a lot though. If I smoke one aro one day, I have to switch it out if I go to smoke another.
