I wonder if my tin buying experience is "tainted"

It seems that I am the guy who is buying up all the older tins in m ylocal shop. Some of them appear to have been there for up to 10 years. LOL I fear this might lead to a bit of distress if I were to buy some of these blends as new tins which have not been aged as long. Oh the troubles of a piper.

Re: I wonder if my tin buying experience is "tainted"

I have the same "problem". All the tins at my local shop are 8-10 years old, at least. Now they're pretty much all gone (since I've purchased them all). I was worried about it too, actually, but I haven't been at all disappointed in new tins, except with Erinmore flake. The first tin of that I had was an old rusty one my B&M had on the shelf, and I just fell in love with it. So, I bought another tin when that one was finished, and I don't like it at all; it tastes very different, and in a bad way. I also got three tins of G.L. Pease Tribute from September, 2001! I'm terrified of opening any of them!

I feel your pain Dave.

Aloha,
Justin

Tins I have gotten at the shop which I can't find elsewhere...especially since the ebay ban....(yes these were OLD tins)

Peterson Irish Oak
Paul Olsen A's My Own Blend #7000
Tordenskjold VA slices
WO Larsen #80
Dunhill Oriental Mixture

I am sure I can find some of these with some sleuthing, but it seems like the guys down the street are having trouble with their wholesalers.

Isn't it great to go into a shop that is primarily a cigar shop and find these old tins of pipe tobacco? There are 3 of these shops like this in the Nashville area. Old dusty tins are can be found on shelves behind the counter. They've been there so long the employees don't even realize they are there anymore. A damp, cool day like today is fun for treasure hunting in some of these old shops. I believe that's what I'm going to do

Good luck and good hunting! Let us know what you find.

To the OP I'd say that if you smoke the old stuff in moderation and keep buying the new stuff to let it age you might be OK. That is, of course, if the old stuff isn't out of production.

I usually buy old tins from ebay, but have been dissapointed the last few times.. the tins seem to have been lightly damaged by the lid (causing a leak) a little to often to be a coincidence, I think evil people sell their damaged tins!

sorry for the threadjack

Re: I wonder if my tin buying experience is "tainted"

I´m reactivating this thread, as the subject is similar.

Yesterday, I opened a recently bought (March) tin of SG St. James Flake. The flakes are fairly moist (the usual in SG's) but the inside of the tin is already very rusty.
How long does it take to develop such thing? I bought it from a well known UK online seller, so I'm sure it's a recent tin.

(camera broken, so no pics)

Thats quite unusual, I have seen SG tins catch rust literally overnight - once opened. But never pre-rusted, yet with undried baccy.
