newbie questions

Hi all ,
Ive had a pipe before but dont know a thing about proper pipe smoking. So , Ive decided to buy online 4 pipes because I do smoke around 3 to 4 times a day at minimum (cigars) so I need 3 to 4 pipes to do so right? Now, I am interested in getting a baby bent walnut pipe cuz its small and acutally is kinda cute....along with an offer consisting of 3 briar pipes for 30 bucks. What you guys think of this?? Is this ok equipment to start on???...Of course along with the pipe cleaners and stuff.... thanks alot,

The amount of pipes depends on how many times you smoke them in a day. Some will say a couple of bowls and you should let the pipe rest. I only smoke one pipe a day...maybe 3-5 bowls in it...then the next day I grap another pip. I do clean my pipes after each use..I use EverClear to keep them in top shape.

I also have one pipe I keep in my truck. I use it every day. It is a small pipe and I clean it on weekends. It never gets sour and I have had this one going on a year.

My question that I ask the Pipe Gods is always....years ago when people smoked pipes more than anything..did they really have a bunch of pipes? I remember my Grandfather...he had a couple of pipes and that was it. He cleaned them but as far as resting them ...they only rested when he put them down..?

Iceman's got a good point. If I were a pipe maker, I'd be on the forums helping people believe they need a new pipe for every bowlful. You jarred my memory: my dad had one pipe. One. For years. I bet he smoked it five or six times/week or so. (It was a beautiful bulldog.) When I was a kid, and pipe smokers were everywhere, I remember some of the old guys having a straight pipe on their belt, in some kind of mini-holster. I bet those guys used that pipe all day.

My Grandfather who smoked pipes for years only had three, and my Dad had just one. I don't think its that necessary to own one for each day of the week. More of a case of having a pipe for different aromatics and other strong flavored tobacco.

I inherited my grandfather’s pipes…he only had three but only smoked the heck out of two of them.

I have about twenty of my own…more of a hobby than anything else. I like cigars, but if I spend $120 on a great box of cigars they are gone after I smoke them. I can get a great pipe for the same price and keep it after the tocacco is gone.

I try to cycle the briar pipes…I may smoke a couple of bowls a day and then let them rest a day. My Meerschaum pipes I smoke every day…..I just let them cool before I re-smoke them. I believe that they do not retain moisture like briar pipes so they should not get any funky tastes.
