How do you smoke cake Tobbaccos?

Recently purchased some McClelland - Christmas Cheer 2008 which comes in cakes. This is my first experience with caked products. I tried it last night for the first time. I basically placed the cakes in the bowl and lightly tamped until I had rought 3/4 a bowl. It was difficult to keep lit at first, but once tamped a bit it broke up and then smoked great.

just wondering if there is a better method.

I have some of this coming on Friday. mmmm. I wonder if it is like flake tobac and you can rub it out. If you tamped and it broke up, I am guessing that rubbing it out may help a little. I'm curious to see what other BOTLS say.

Just pick off a chunk and rub with finger and thumb until it crumbles up.

McCelland Christmas Cheer comes in a Flake cut not a cake cut. For any flake or cake cut, rub out the tobocco with two fingers as fine as you can get it.

This is a good year for it so enjoy it.

Also, for those that like a finer cut..... A spice or coffee grinder, "pulsed" a few times will do wonders on flakes and cakes.

you can buy tobacco grinders - they look like a hockey puck and when taken apart they will have some nubs or pegs inside to break up the tobacco without turning it into snuff

Yes, but most of the time they come in psychedelic colours and have either aliens or 9 fronded leaves on them.

Cup O Joes has grinders that are not really aimed at the pot smoker.
No pot leaves and crazy colors all though they are called Sweat Leaf

I take a razor blade and slice off a thin piece of cake. This breaks it up pretty fine, works well for me.

Not if you spend a few minutes looking for other designs Sometimes you have to go to the Ebay seller's store listing. I have three of these and they work pretty well on flakes but that's about it. Anything else I just cup in the palm of my hand and roll back and forth with the first two fingers of my other hand. Works a lot better than the thumb/finger thing for me.

Yes, you are correct, it is cake cut...bad description on my part. It seems a bit moist to just break up with the fingers and the first bowl did smoke a bit wet, but was very good. Maybe I will put a small amount in a pouch to dry it a bit first.

Never had it before, but I take your word that it is a good year. I am ordering some extra for a meager cellar at home.
