If I get my deer I'm going to smoke it in a pipe stand.

One blend I would not recommend is Lamb Cake Slices; it would probably scare them away for sure:

Re: Anyone smoke a pipe in a deer stand?

The whole scent thing might make a small difference but after talking to plenty of people that practically pay several thousands of dollars to go out with a guide to basically be guaranteed a trophy sized animal of any sort (last one I talked to was going after red stag in a couple of months and had just gotten back from a trip for that perfect trophy buck), while carrying the "top" gear, and getting back and being totally pissed if they come back with nothing I don't put much stock in the scent block stuff and have little respect for someone who does. Especially when my friends and I can walk through a field behind our house and either spot one there or in the woods farther back without spending thousands.
I say light it up and enjoy the trip. It's not like you're giving the deer a gun to hunt with too anyway.

Re: Anyone smoke a pipe in a deer stand?

I smoke deer from a tree stand.
Then I smoke a pipe in front of the meat smoker.
Then I eat the smoked tenderloin.
Then smoke a pipe from a chair.
I like to mix it up.

(P'GOP - I too have human-desensitized deer parading through my yard. I believe, however, that many of your basic trophy horns reside (outside of urban/suburban territotry) on the heads of critters who can be very sentitive to unnatural scent. I have seen western elk run at at 500 yards on no other change than a wind shift. And I have had an eight point buck in my backyard look at me like I'm bothering him from 15 yards. Go figure.)

I sort of was going the direction of people that go to a place stocked with game where they pay enough to almost be guaranteed a shot at a prized animal. And the goal behind the gear they buy being to take all chance out of the hunt.

But here no, I'd definately have to say it's not urban/suburban with about 200 acres of dense woods with a couple of fields reaching up around 300 and the only houses around being pretty sparse. My point was just that it's possible- true we weren't right on top of them but they were visible. And the bigger point is that if you want to spend tens of thousands of dollars on the stuff knowingly taking as much chance as possible out of it, and this is just my opinion, but it goes from being what could be considered sport to being a live meat market and the highest bidder wins.

Smoked some Dunhill 965 this morning but no deer came out...I had to leave early so they probably all showed up wondering what that delightful smell was...

Tinks is practically the most important thing to Blue Ridge mountain hunters seeking the monster rack. It's more important than peppermint schnapps, even. (Probly best not to dribble any in you tobak, though. Forgive me that suggestion. )
