Anyone smoke a pipe in a deer stand?

Have any of you ever smoked your pipe in the deer stand? They say the deer have an insanely good sense of smell, so I guess they would "smell" it, but does it bother them? What a great way to pass the time, and then if you get to take a buck on top of that...

I have never smoked my pipe in a deer stand but I will tell you a funny story.

Anyone who hunts or watches some of the hunting shows on TV etc know that every show they insanely hype and promote the "scent blocker" clothing etc...from the way they tout this stuff you wonder how on earth man ever killed a deer before companies set up shop in china making "scent blocker" clothing. anyway, my point.

Two seasons ago I was sitting in a tree stand in south mississippi. I had been sitting in the stand for about 3 hours at this point and had seen nothing at all it was muzzle loader season. I was still a cigarette smoker at the time and decided what the hell and lit up a marlboro. about a minute later the wind had switched and was blowing directly into my back and low and behold 30 yards in front of me a very nice 6 point stepped out in front of my stand. I slowly leaned up and squeezed off a shot that dropped him where he stood.

He had to have smelled the smoke because as I said when I saw him the wind was carrying my scent as well as the smoke right to him...that might have been what made him step out and stop when he smelled it...oh well

I guess if the hunting is slow fire up the pipe....you might attract a deer looking to sample a new blend lol

Although I haven't actually smoked "in the stand", I do carry a MM cob and a pouch of PA or CH when I go. I leave it in the truck for the trip home however.

No but I smoked a bong while standing in line for a Dave Matthews concert! The security guards have a great sense of smell!

I go out with coffee all the time, after my brother-in-law shot a couple deer while having a cup o' joe...he doesn't even bother putting camo on...

I've had deer in the backyard no more than 15 yards away when I was out smoking a pipe. But these were suburb deer, and more used to humans. I kept my movments to a minimum and they didn't seem bothered by the pipe smoke.

I read something once, I think it was Sigurd Olsen's book "Listening Point", where he got all doped up with deer estrus before going hunting. His wife also hunted, and made fun of him for stinking. To prove her point she sprayed perfume all over herself. She got the big buck, he got nothing.

Deer stands are not very popular out in California because of the method at which we have to hunt. We usually throw a back pack and end up hiking around all day hitting different places. Sometimes I sit in one spot all day but never think to bring a pipe and I would want to damage it. Idk never thought of it, it doesn't seem practical for the hunting style.

I got a tip from an old hunter, he lit a small can of deisel fuel. That killed every human scent, and the moose didnt mide the deisel smell he claimed...

He doesn't hunt with quick_nick out in california does he? That would explain the wild fires...

I will have a bowl on the way to my blind (archery hunting) and prly smell like smoke, and I routinely get within 6-10 yards of deer that have no clue. Scent Blocker...whatever you need--placebo for hunters.

I'm planning on going hunting this Saturday, so hopefully my pipe will draw a huge buck out for me

Y'know, I've been thinking about this subject since deer season started! I began pipe smoking in May and haven't been able to bring myself to light up in the woods yet, but I'm heading to NYS again for a final weekend and I just may light up my pipe filled with some Cup O' Joes Blueberry Cobbler and see what happens.
I've had my pie with me on stand before, just haven't smoked it yet. Nine hours is a loooooong time out there, esp being that it's gonna be so cold!
