Woo hoo! New pipe and experience

Hey all, long time member/cigar smoker n00b pipe smoker.

I just got back from my local B&M with this...

Had a chance to smoke a bowl...good stuff. They through in a bag of house blend that has a nice vanilla aroma and very lite taste. Good stuff. Now the world of pipe tobacco is my oyster!

My first smoke was Norseman. Dont know who makes it but I did enjoy it. Enough to stick with it. My problem was that I was smoking out of a Benton (which I have since misplaced). I liked the pipe at first, but relighting got really old, and it gurgled too often too fast. From the looks of it, youre definately off to a better start than I was.

Re: Woo hoo! New pipe and experience

Matt, that looks like an excellent beginning. My experience with Petersons is that they are excellent smoking pipes. You may want to check the bowl. Petersons are dip stained and the inside of the bowl gets stained right along with the outside, providing a sometimes foul smoke until cake has formed. This is easy to remedy. Carefully sand the inside of the bowl with 1200 sand paper to remove the stain.

Re: Woo hoo! New pipe and experience

Thanks all. It shouldn't take long to build up a nice cake that's for sure. These cold winter nights just cry out for a good bowl. I much prefer cigars in warmer weather. Good times.

Yes it's a system pipe.

I saw the video on the Peterson home page too. If I recall correctly mine IS stained on the inside or was, but not as much as the outside. It's a great video...makes a little "homesick".

Re: Woo hoo! New pipe and experience

Ahhhhh young Padawan you did good, that looks like a 307. I'm not sure but I believe the bowl coating/stain is alcohol based, the reason I think this is because I use Everclear to pull it out and it does nicely. If it doesn't bother you having the stain in there then don't worry about it. If it were me though, what I would do is get a couple of cobs until you know what you like so you don't ghost up that beauty, the system pipe has a deep well and a ghost can get down there and be hell trying to get out. just my .02.

Re: Woo hoo! New pipe and experience

Actually it's a 313. And by Ghosting you mean embedding a taste of something I don't like? And from my reading it sounds like I'm going to have to get a couple cobbs. So many types and blends...

I stand corrected.....Ghosting may or may not be something you dislike....For instance....I'm not much of an Aro's smoker but I do smoke a couple as the mood hits.but what I don't want is a pipe giving off an aromatic sum'n or other when I smoke an English blend...thats the reason for pipe designation. As beautiful as your 313 is you will find it confusing...maybe not disliking, but confusing, if you smoke different types of tobacco out of it.
