SG Chocolate Flake too dry?

I took delivery on 1 lb. of SG Chocolate Flake yesterday from SmokingPipes.com yesterday. I never had any problems with them and the tobac came in a box sealed with plastic, but man it was dry. It usually is wet when I get it and I rub it out and let it dry overnight. The stuff i got just crumbled it was so dry. It had to be "aged" quite a while to be so dry it just crumbled. it doesn't smoke too bad, but it just doesn't seem right. i think I should send it back or am I being too picky?

Re: SG Chocolate Flake too dry?

Most of my SG lbs have come very dry compared to the tins. I just rehydrate it.

Personally I rehydrate in parts. I keep the full pounds in Ball jars and when I'm ready to smoke it, I move 4 ounces at a time to a smaller tobacco jar that I load my pipe from. If it's too dry, I rehydrate the 4 ounces in the tobacco jar by placing the humidifying agent (in this case, a clay disc encased in metal with holes in the metal jacket) to the top of the jar. In a day, my tobacco is completely restored.

But my tobacco has never gotten to the bone dry and crumbly state so it may be preferable to rehydrate the whole pound at once. I'm interested in anyone else's method so I'll be following this thread along with you!

Re: SG Chocolate Flake too dry?

I've read about several ways to rehydrated tobaccos over the years.

Personally, I've lightly misted tobaccos that I store in Ball jars and haven't had any problems. Some have mentioned using sliced fruit, such as apples, but I worry about mold with that method, so I haven't done it myself.

The best method I've read so far is laying out the tobacco in a large flat bowl/casserole dish and placing a damp paper towel over the top of the dish, but not touching the tobacco. Check periodically for moistness.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, that sounds easy enough

Re: SG Chocolate Flake too dry?

I put mine in 1 quart jars and steam it from the tea kettle at the distance where the steam is turning to vapor. The dry tabak absorbs the mist almost instantly and its pretty easy to tell when to stop and seal it up.
