Beware the listings that have one blurry photo, two sentences of info (with bad spelling) and a "sold as is" somewhere in there. Them are the ones selling aromatic-soaked cracked briar and gnawed stems a lot of the time. Caveat emptor.
I like buying the pipes that require a bit of TLC before smoking! I think cleaning the pipes up and making them look good is a lot of fun! When I got this one, I was excited to find out what I could do to fix the stem (after thinking "who in God's name smoked this?"). One of these days I'll spend over $20 for a good new or nice estate pipe, but for now I'm happy getting my kicks from cleaning them and then sitting back, lighting up and enjoying my handywork!

Re: How in the hell?

Yours looks good compared to the Sav I recently purchased. Mine is worn completely through on the bottom. Best I can figured it that the previous owner liked to grind his teeth while smoking. Like the rubber bit idea. Otherwise the pipe cleaned up well.
