How in the hell?
I recently got an orange Dr.Grabow Viscount Adjustomatic bulldog off ebay. After I took it out of the box I immediately noticed something wrong with it. Now I'm not complaining, it was an as-is estate pipe with few pictures and only $8, so I wasn't expecting it to be in great condition. But I am at a loss as to how something like this could happen to a mouthpiece! It looks as if someone with hot metal teeth bit down on it!
The pipe was EXTREMELY dirty. There was quite a bit of cake in the bowl, and the threaded metal end of the stem was BROWN. I scrubbed the hell out of it with a paper towel with alcohol on it, and it looks pretty good. I cleaned the outside of the mouthpiece with toothpaste and olive oil. Basically I got it to look fairly good, but I want to smoke it! Does anyone know where I could get a replacement mouthpiece? And does anyone know how this could've happened? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Re: How in the hell?
That's one nasty stem! Is it bitten through?
You could try some rubber tips to cover it. There's a repair place called Precision Pipe Repair that you can send it to. Heard there is a 6-8 week wait though. Here's the link: http://www.precisionpiperepair.com/about.php |

Re: How in the hell?
Stick it in bowling water and try to work it out. Stick a pipe cleaner or two in the air way. I used a very small screwdriver to help mine out.

I'd just get a rubber softy bit and try that. If you really want someone to fix it, you could also try Walker Briar Works if the PPR wait list seems too long for you.Aloha, Justin By the way, I just wanted to say that now I absolutely have to have an orange Grabow. I had no idea you could find one in orange, and orange is my favorite. Last edited by Smarvy; 12-02-2008 at 06:30 PM.. Reason: Add a comment |

Son! You're in the wrong thread! Think positive!
You need to move this whole thing over to the "Estate Pipe - Diamonds From Coal" place and start planning your work and working your plan. You'll have that little puppy tip-top in no time.

Re: How in the hell?
I had an estate I got off of ebay and there was one toothmark (looked just like in tour pic) that was so deep it closed the hole in the end of the stem. I soaked it in alcohol for a couple of hours to soften the vulcanite and slid a small nail file from my multitool in the end and gently and slowly pushed it back out later I sanded it and while you can still see it a little bit it smokes nicely.

Re: How in the hell?
that's fixable w/o a doubt. use a heat gun or steaming water to warm the vulcanite. a jewler's screwdriver can push it back out. if there's an actual hole or a bigger dent than ya want to deal with, i've used black epoxy to fill it then sand it smooth. clear epoxy mixed w/carbon works too.

Re: How in the hell?
I've gotten several old estates like that with very deep toothmarks, usually just one. I read that you can boil the stem about 5 minutes to fix. Never done it myself though........ and Moo's right

Re: How in the hell?
Ebay demands a good weather eye on pipes; plenty of beaten up stuff is sold by people who have no interest or knowledge in what they're offering. Beware the listings that have one blurry photo, two sentences of info (with bad spelling) and a "sold as is" somewhere in there. Them are the ones selling aromatic-soaked cracked briar and gnawed stems a lot of the time. Caveat emptor.
