Just an FYI for your future reference: There is a "sticky" entitled Ebay Finds and Wins

...and congratulations on your Brebbia WIN!

Made that same mistake when I bought my first Zeman pipe. There's just no comparison.

I've had different experiences. In fact, I'm amazed at how well many of my less expensive pipes smoke. I have a Danish brandy glass pipe that wasn't even stamped with a manufacturers name that smokes as well as my Ashton... $35 used vs probably $300 on the used market. And it has better balance.

With a higher price tag, you tend to get fewer flaws (or none, in the case of Dunhill and some others), a higher degree of hand building, tighter tolerances against draft hole and other anomalies (which means less of a chance of it turning into a lemon), and/or more spectacular grain (as well as bragging rights) - and NOT necessarily better smoking quality. Sometimes yes, but not always.

I have a place in my collection for inexpensive as well as expensive pipes.

Re: ebay win

I agree some of my best smokers have been lower in price. Higher price doesn't mean higher quality i have a ebay estate stanwell danish star thats a second line for stanwell was 18.00 dollars smokes great also a savinelli squat tomato another good one for me its the enjoyment of the pipe the whole deal from loading to lighting to tapping out the last ash and the look at what comes next so just enjoy the pipes you have be it a dunhill, ashton or a grabo or a no name just enjoy and happy smoking

Judging a pipe by it's price is like judging Yoda by his size......big mistake.

Yeah, I agree.

I should add that the attributes of a more expensive pipe that I mentioned above are nice attributes, and make the pipe worth the cost in my opinion. I like straight grains as much as the next guy. But the quality of the smoke is often not any better in those pipes than in less expensive ones. I've never smoked a Dr Grabow so I can't comment on the OP's post, but I've got several sub-$100 pipes that smoke as well as anything I've ever owned at 3-4 times that price.
