It's not unusual to see pics of Santa with a pipe or even depression era pics of people with pipes. Anyone else know of a modern pic portraying a pipe smoker you'd like to share?

Re: Pipe Art

Well, I am normally really lame and rarely do much talking on these forums, primarily because I feel that I would have little to nothing to say constructive wise. But, I couldn't help but share on this one and toot my own horn by sharing some art of my own.

It ain't a pipe smoker but it does primarily involve the use of burned up old pipe cleaners and collected pipe ash to create this sculpture. This is one of my favorite pieces of a series that I did and it is currently hangin out in the theology/smoking room of a local bookstore where I spend a great deal of my time. I am curious to see what you folks think, even if you are creeped out by it. I can also elaborate on what this piece was all about in conjunction with the other pieces.

What's the material used in "the vase" (sorry about my english, don't know the correct word) which is consuming the pipe cleaner-skeleton? Does it have something to do with the ash? What's the size of it?

Very interesting piece, it is a nice conversation starter

I would like this but there is that loose right hand on the bottom right of the pic which gets my attention the wrong way. Might be somebody else was supposed to be in the pic too (perhaps bad cropping?), but since we do not see him/her it looks like the artist did draw two right hands for the smoker.

Re: Pipe Art

This piece is that of a broken posture of repentance. I took this Old Testament image of people clothing themselves in sack cloth and bathing in ash in order to outwardly bring themselves to a state of humility and repentance before their Creator, such as Job or the people of Nineveh in the book of Jonah. So I created this figure out of tarry pipe cleaners and submerged him in pipe ash. The inside of his head actually consists of burlap, similar material as sack cloth. The actual vessel is just ceramic that I built from slabs of clay and once fired I stained it with burning newspaper around it in a large trash barrel. When it was still warm I melted some beeswax over the outside of it to give it a subtle skin like quality to the vessel itself. the dimensions are about 5 inches wide 6 inches depth and 11 inches tall from the photo's perspective. (some what of a good guess)

Re: Pipe Art

Can't see the above ^.

The fact that that piece is in a theology/smoking room is badass...great work!

I've been looking for some pipe related wallpaper/art for the computer...hmmm...
