A new Virginian for me

I went to the local smoke shop and picked up a tin of Dorchester very aged and opening the can it has a different smell than the Troost for sure. The lid describes it as a blend of mature VA and LA perique. I am trying a bowl of this tonight.

Re: A new Virginian for me

Welcome to the wonderful world of Va/Per blends!

Some more to try

Escudo
McConnell (?) Scottish Cake
PS Luxury Navy Flake
PS Luxury Bullseye Flake
Plus a TON of others. There's actually a thread on here ranking these blends by someone. I think it was titled the Va/Per showdown. If you want more, try searching for that thread. You won't be disappointed by it.

Re: A new Virginian for me

we did some "blind reviews" a while back, and Esoterica Dorchester was the 1st blend we reviewed.

check out the reviews here to see what ppl thought of it before they knew what it really was.

Re: A new Virginian for me

This is the way a pipe smoke was meant to be as far as my rookie experiences can tell. Wonderful smoke!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have always wonered about the taste and smell notes people add but you can taste dates and a mild spicyness to it and my nose loved it.
More smokes like this and I know why pipe smoking is so enjoyable.

The concept of blind tobacco reviews is very interesting. Did this die from lack of interest or is it something that's still on the table? I wouldn't mind getting involved in something like this.

it didn't die from lack of interest, no, not at all.

it's something anyone on here can start up, host, whatever. a lot of ppl have moved on from this site for various reasons, and some of those were the ones that started different CS pipe community activities.
luckily, blaylock has taken the reigns and is doing a helluva job in the pipe section (along with the other mods).
but, it's not a "mod thing", it's a member thing. anyone can start a blind review, change how it was done. nothing is set in stone on how you can do things...
new guys are starting the "TOM" (tobacco of the month), might as well get some ppl to do a "blind review" as well.

Re: A new Virginian for me

Cool. After the holidays, I'm going to see if there is member interest. I'll probably do it slightly differently but I think the concept of blind tests is interesting. But thanks for posting this again for use newbies - gives me a strong foundation.

dude, I'M still a new guy to me.
you'll find that, like most boards, post count doesn't equal knowledge (same goes for RG on this board). judge ppl by what they say, not how often it's said.

I was just joking around with you man. I'm not looking for online brownie points, just knowledge. And I'm not really a fan of the RG.
