I know we're not supposed to ask about sources, but...

Okay...you guys have been driving me nuts with your talk about pipes and pipe tobacco samples, so today I went looking for what was left of a once magnificent pipe collection and lo and behold, what did I find? 3 corncobs...yep, 3 corncobs..that was it...all the beautiful meerschaums, and hand-carved pipes, and calabashes...all gone...sold...I remember doing it in fact...thought I was giving up pipe smoking for good...about 15 years ago...switched to cigars I did...and now? Now, you guys have made me start craving an occasional pipeful...do you know, that back in the day when I lived in NJ I was a card-carrying member of the pipe club that was located at Keens Steakhouse in NYC? You'd present your card and after dinner they would fetch your personal clay churchwarden from the racks overhead, and then they would bring you a bowlful of whichever tobacco selection you indicated you wanted that night...ah, those were the days...yep...that, of course, was before they had a fire and the pipe club came to an end because of insurance and NYC fire laws...now all the pipes overhead are just decoration...but if you're in NYC stop and eat there...great restaurant...known for their mutton chops...and they have a beautiful display case that has many of the clay churchwardens used by famous people...Douglas MacArthur, Babe Ruth, Theodore Roosevelt, Will Rogers, Albert Einstein, George M. Cohan, John Barrymore, “Buffalo Bill” Cody, etc...but I digress...so how about a few sources, guys...you know, best places for pipes, accessories, and tobacco? Maybe just point me in the right direction with a few links of online retailers you've found reliable? Just looking for a few good places to check out without getting too far into it...maybe just buy one or two decent pipes and a few flavors of tobacco, just to have as a change from the cigars...I love my cigars far too much to ever think about giving them up...in fact, I've already told Marie that when they lay me in the sod there better be a fiver of something spectacular in my breast pocket to take into the afterlife with me...maybe even offer one to my maker and have a herf with him...heh...and no, I'm not asking about buying havana tobacco to smoke in a pipe, but one can dream...

Re: I know we're not supposed to ask about sources, but...

BTW, just so ya know, I perused the stickies here about pipes, tobacco reviews, and links...the links sticky is great but far too much information...would just like one or two good reliable sites, maybe some moderately priced pipes, accessories, and perhaps suggestions for a couple of different tobaccos...was thinking of starting with Penzance & Pembroke, both looked interesting...

Re: I know we're not supposed to ask about sources, but...

I have no idea about online vendors, as I just got into pipes (bought my first pipe yesterday, have put 2 bowls through it), buuuuuuut... I do know that you can get a buttload of free tobacco in the "Free Pipe Tobacco" thread, and that enclosed in that tobacco is a coupon for Velani pipes. The special is $20 for one, 2 for $35 or all 3 for $50. They look to be nice pipes. Here is what the coupon says: "Finest Algerian briar, sterling silver band on trim, silver finished housing. Lucite stem, made in Italy. Regularly $65.00" So I'd suggest picking up the free pipe tobacco. If you don't want the free pipe tobacco, I have a spare coupon that you can have.

Here is a fairly good source for pipes - I think - wide range of prices - both new and estate.

www.thepiperack.com
www.frenchyspipes.com

Way too many good places for tobacco - but you can try

www.smokershaven.com
www.pipesandcigars.com

I have used all of these sites and feel comfortable in making these recommendations.

Good Luck!

Marc,
As a quick fix, TW has some pipes and accessories. they are at the counter as soon as you walk in the door. Some real nice looking ones too. When you go there, Tell Kriss and Marrit Hi from the crew. We should do another herf there, It's been a while since the last one!!!!!

Ron

Thanks for another source. Pipe tobacco is so much more consistent an experience than cigars. No plugs. Flavor is basically the same each time I try it. It's a comfort in an uncertain world.

I'll second www.frenchyspipes.com , they are the only one ive delt with for pipes (just started) but I had no problem at all, and the guy there seems to care about his customers.

I couldn't agree more with that statement. Pipes are just so reliable

Just ok eh? I certainly get the best service from them. I also like knoxville and paylesspipes, all solid sites.

I want that damn Wolly mammoth pipe from knox

Who said pipes were less expensive than cigars?

Thats a great observation Dave. It is good to know that when you buy a package of tobacco, every bowl will be the same. You don't have to worry about poor draws or shoddy construction. Plus humidity isn't as critical.

www.pipesandcigars.com is one that I find pretty reliable.

Re: I know we're not supposed to ask about sources, but...

I have bought pipes from three on-line places and had fine experiences with all:
http://www.ff-pipes.com - these guys are in Denmark. Support 'em if the news lately inclines you as it did me. Haven't received my order yet but the selection process and diaolg I had wioth the owner was reason enough to recommend 'em. www.Pipes2Smoke.com - got a nice estate there for a good price, and www.deadguyspipes.com. Got a nice estate there too.
