pure virginias for a newbie
I´m only smoking pipes for the last couple of months, and where I live is very hard to find tinned tobaccos other than Peterson's and a couple more.
So, untill now I´ve only smoked Old Dublin, Irish Oak, University Flake, and also St. Bruno, MacBaren Mixture, Virginia nº1 and Amphora Red. Finally, I found a european online store and will be able to experiment a lot of different blends. I already know I enjoy latakia (Old Dublin being the only I´ve tried, though), and managed to select other latakia blends I will immediatly buy. However, I would like to try some pure Virginia's. The problem is that my only experience was with Virginia nº1, and I couldn´t finish the pouch... find it extremely sweet, honey like, and didn't enjoy it. What do you recommend? I know that FVF and Old Gowrie are popular blends. Are they honey like? Thank you for your answers |

Re: pure virginias for a newbie
DVD is an excellent va flake. Not anywhere near the sweetness of no 1.

Re: pure virginias for a newbie
Samuel Gawith Full Virginia Flake (FVF) is an excellent VA, especially for noobs, as it is very forgiving. Mash it up and pack* appropriately, lights easy, burns well, nary any tongue nipping. Grassy sweetness, all VAs are sweet (its their nature, ain't they darlings). Good nic hit, reasonable price, a jolly good english VA, and all that sort of rot, what, what, what!

I second the Gawith FVF. But I also recommend Robert McConnell Red VI. Very tasty and quite forgiving

Thanks guys, I´ll try the FVF.
I´m ordering one tin each of: Squadron Leader; Commonwealth; Erinmore Balkan Mixture; Presbyterian; and FVF. ![]() |

Rattray's Hal O' the Wynd or Bjarne's Flake de Luxe
