Is a cob supposed to look like this?

I bought a MM pipe from a drug store and I was just wondering if it's supposed to look so rough on the inside. Also the stem is kinda splintered at the end inside and their is some build-up by the stem inside which I assume is wax, correct?

Wax or varnish, I wouldn't worry, you'll be surprised how well she'll smoke. A cob is for smoking, not admiring, although they can look dam fine.

Looks like the stem in the bowl might have been cut not so well since the opening is centered in the bowl. You can cut it back with a pocket knife if you want to. I always do. Of course I always level the bottom of the chamber with putty or pipe mud too but that's just me. I'm not a big fan of cobs.

Eyap - that's a cob... pack 'em, smoke 'em. Not so much look at 'em. I keep at least 4 laying around. Perfect garage/yard/car pipes. I usually admit that in a cob, that I am going to sacrifice that last bit of tabac in the bottom of the bowl due to the nature of the stem/ bowl joint.

Take some sandpaper and polish it inside and out.
It'll smoke like a dream.

Yep cut the stem back inside the pipe, fill it up with your favourite tobacco and smoke it. When finished just ream clean with a paper wad and your done. Cobs don't want a cake build up like briars
